to think it's harder for vegetarians to diet?

If I ate meat I could do lots of grilled fish and salad and citrus dressing, and lean chicken and steamed veg.

Am currently trying to lose weight and I MISS CHEESE DAMMIT.

poor you. is low fat cheddar any good? or natural cottage cheese or extra low fat philly instead?

Actually, if you are craving cheese, a bit of salt on your food can help. Well, helps me. not sure why.

No, I agree, it's a bugger!

Tofu, although unexciting, is quite helpful though - if you marinade it and then roast/fry it in chunks it's good for adding body to salads and the like.

I also rely on feta quite a lot - yes, I know it's still cheese and not exactly low-fat but a little goes a long way as it's so salty.

It seems as though it is very unhealthy to diet. I haven't dieted for years and years and years. Suddenly my diet is full of low fat options and diet things and crap that I wouldn't normally touch.

join slimming world, they have green days which is basically no meat. i lost 2 stone with them and ate tons!

Ohhh... did you watch the BBC 'what to eat to lose weight' programme last week? Watch it on i-player if you didn't. One of the sections was on low fat dairy...skimmed milk/yoghurt and low fat cheese. They got Alex James from Blur (who now makes cheese.. so was vaguely relevent) to have 2 diets over two weeks. Both conatined the same calories... the first week where he controlled dairy, the second week was high in low fat dairy. They then checked out how much fat he was excreting in his poo. He excreted twice as much during the high dairy week even though both diets were worth the same calories. It was the extra calcium that 'binds' to the fat and so less is absorbed from the ileum.

You dont have to cut out cheese completely, you could have a small chuck each day and still loose weight

I still had cheese every day on slimming world diet and still lost weight

It means if you have two meals with the same number of calories but one is high in dairy and one has low or no dairy, you will absorb more fat from the low dairy meal. So dairy is good.

Speaking as a vegetarian myself, I think it's a piece of cake (ha ha)! Eat this stuff:

Tofu - smoked or marinated, added to stir fries or salads

Eggs - poached and boiled, on toast, on salads

Lentils and pulses - very filling, low fat, cheap and nutritious - make into curries or with pasta

QUORN - you can eat about a ton of sausages and burgers (grilled) or those quorn chunks before you get into any serious amount of calories and fat

Just eat tiny amounts of good cheese and don't buy that horrible low fat stuff as it only encourages them..

I'm veggie and have have managed to lose some weight ( not enough yet though ! ) by switching to cottage cheese & non fat yogurt, and generally cutting out fat - but it is HARD!
Beans, pulses, brown rice definately the way to go - no fat but very nutritious
But you're right - everyting you read about diet is geared towards meat eaters
