To suggest that enforced national food rationing might help solve the nation's obesity problem?

Lucia39 · 30/05/2009 00:13

During the period 1939-1954 the nation's diet was, apparently, the healthiest it has ever been.

So would a similar regime assist helping those who are increasingly "dimensionally challenged"?

Vegetables, fruit, and pulses would be more freely available but meat, dairy produce, sugar and fats would be strictly rationed.

Any thoughts?

MachuPicchu · 31/05/2009 19:18

Oh good grief the abuse comment is abhorrent.

daftpunk · 31/05/2009 19:21

lol lucia39..you are bonkers..

it's a good idea in theory..but in practice wouldn't work...as xenia says, the fatties tend to be people on low incomes or benefits...to deny them their saturated fat would be too much....education is the way to go.

Morloth · 31/05/2009 19:23

Thunderduck they were delicious. Ended up costing me heaps though cause we screwed up a couple of Mum's pans and I had to replace it.

Note for beginniers: Sugar that has been fried onto something is impossible to remove.

LOL. I'm very impressed that you made your own deep fried Mars Bars.

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:42

Re the op. Enforced food rationing will not work. Let's get real.

The government needs to put limits on the amount of utter crap that is allowed to be pumped into processed foods. They could also restrict marketing of crisp and confectionery manufacturers and raise quality. They probably won't because a lot of Very Big Businesses will be cross.

But the shite we eat is a serious problem.

daftpunk · 31/05/2009 19:42

that's an age thing though riven...poeple tend to get fatter as they get older..

scottishmummy · 31/05/2009 19:43

and did she enjoy her cholesterol bursting snack.some chippies do snickers etc too

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:43

nigella lawson showed us all how to make a deep fried bounty bar on telly.

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:44

well, apprently she likes to order one a couple of times a year. dd1 felt a bit sick at the thought.

Quattrocento · 31/05/2009 19:44

Well I think it would help everyone if a calorie count was put on the front of EVERY product.

harleyd · 31/05/2009 19:44

theres a chippy here will deep fry anything you take in to them

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:45

just read xenia's post - var good.

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:48

I don't think calories are the biggest problem, though, quatt. It's the Crap. The Crap is the problem. We need to take food back from the processing factories, make it real again.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2009 19:49

yeah keep food real.sound like da staines massif

Quattrocento · 31/05/2009 19:50

Umm yes I see your point about the CRAP but surely eating a moderate amount of CRAP would be better than overdosing on it?

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:52

unhealthy food = cheap, healthy = expensive

Not True

Morloth · 31/05/2009 19:52

I think the problem Quattro is that many people only eat the crap (and I include all "diet" foods under the term crap).

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:52

booyakasha

pointydog · 31/05/2009 19:56

Depends what you think crap is, quatt.

Home-baking is not crap. It's good stuff. But it's high in calories so don't have too much of it. Same re bread, butter, jam etc.

Deep-fried, hunners of chemicals, gloopy emulsifying additives, ready-made, salt and sugar addded in bulk, overdoses of oils, CRAP.

Crisps, British 'chocolate' confectionary, nearly all British food which is marketed as Snacks, CRAP.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2009 19:57

aye keep it real

Ali G:Iz simple, two words: keep it real!
Cabinet M.P.: That's three words!
Ali G: Don't be a spannah, it ain't a real word. It's short for innit, innit?

my fave quote of so many

Quattrocento · 31/05/2009 19:59

I've just been introduced to Borat by DS. Is hilarious

pointydog · 31/05/2009 20:00

where have you been, quatt, not to know of borat?
