Who gives a fuck really [disclaimer bad bad day]

wickedwitchofwestfield · 27/05/2009 22:40

we've recently started getting our eggs from my charges nursery - where they keep chickens [le smug]

however - I don't really care either way

I eat cheap meat too.
£1.88 for 8 skinless halal thighs in asda - can't quibble

ah well, the firey pit of enternal damnation it is for me then!

Lovesdogsandcats · 27/05/2009 22:41

Oh & mung beans are a great mince substitute, but tbh I'd want a richer sauce than that one for a Shep Pie - I'd cook the beans, then add to a sauce with lots of veg & a jar of pasta sauce/lots of tomato puree...

Lovesdogsandcats · 27/05/2009 22:44

raven, I made a nice stock and added tomato puree, and it was very nice.
Pulses are not only full of protein but taste lovely too. My kids love the texture of pulses, but they eat meat too.

'dumb, dumb and dumber tonight- what the hell does that mean '

try puzzling it out.

it's not even as hard as trying to calculate one's Working Tax Credit entitlement, however much a non sequitur.

Thunderduck · 27/05/2009 22:44

I'd add some garlic and a few herbs. As well as the vegetable stock and tomato puree that Lovecats suggested.

"If we tell them we want FR, FR will get cheaper still"

Only up to a point. It will cost more to have free range no matter what you do.

expatinscotland · 27/05/2009 22:49

Ach, no, Love. So much better, and easier, to wind up the pompous and psuedo-bourgeois.

It's a frequent and fav pastime of mine, and, although 'Enigma' is on TV tonight and it is an excellent film despite having Kate Winslet in a leading role, I've seen it too many times.

Chop, chop! Carry on!

BlueGreen · 27/05/2009 22:53

"I personally want to see all battery places closed down, and the eggs banned. "

And i personally want you to buy free range eggs for us, who are not able/efford to buy.

onagar · 27/05/2009 22:56

Yeah, that's the answer. Stand in the supermarket by the battery eggs and offer to pay for FR for anyone who turns up. It's only money after all.

Lovesdogsandcats · 27/05/2009 22:58

Oh back to that then...people cannot survive without eggs/cheap chicken etc?

OP posts:
ravenAK · 27/05/2009 22:58

Not necessarily.

Caged birds works on economies of scale. If all the major supermarkets were saying 'Actually, 90% of our customers are happy to pay 5p extra per dozen for FR. 60% are willing to pay 50p extra. So we're pricing our FR eggs at 20p over yours, cutting our order with you & buying more eggs from FR Farmer down the road'...

...then ultimately, it proves uneconomic for chicken farmers to use cages.

Bear in mind too that it's quite high profile. It's a cheap change for punters to make (whereas going entirely organic vegan, say, is troublesome & pricey unless you know what you're doing). It's had celeb attention from J Oliver et alia.

There will hopefully come a point where it'll be in no-one's interest to farm caged hens.

Eggs seem to be v. expensive these days. I wouldn't buy battery-farmed, though. Maybe that makes me 'pseudo-bourgeois' - fine by me: I've spent my whole life trying to get away from the kind of people who tell you that eating shite food/having low aspirations is all part of ordinary people's experience. It's just another way of telling you to know your place, so sod that.
