...then don't buy at all?

I mean the suffering these birds go through in cramped, dirty sheds is unbelievable. There is usually no natural light and the birds are usually ill before they're culled.

If you can stomach it, please look at these:

Wherethewildthings I assume the other half goes to someone else and isn't left limping around the field going 'ow'!

jumpingbeans · 27/05/2009 11:28

aibu, to think the op should get off her high horse,do what she feels is right for her and hers and leave everyone else the fuck alone, we all know about battery chickens, eggs ect, its rammed down our throats enough, if we chose to still eat it ,then is's our choice

PinkTulips · 27/05/2009 11:28

i'm fairly poor and i totally agree with the op tbh [valiantly pretends that the 184 posts since then have all been calm reasonable and on topic]

we're currently both out of work (yet again) and scraping by on the dole but i refuse to buy battery farmed chicken or eggs.

i go to the butcher for free range chicken as his prices are better than the supermarkets and i buy free range eggs in lidl.

i'd rather we ate chicken less often rather than give money to the battery farmers and their evil.

we don't have meat every night, probably 2/3 times a week and we fill up with lots of mushrooms and other protein sources the other nights.

i'd rather give the kids scrambled eggs on toast for dinner once a week than battery farmed chicken.

my choice my kids, i don't expect others to follow my beliefs but i do agree with the op in that it is very doable even on a low budget not to have to buy cheap chicken and eggs

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 27/05/2009 11:28

Lol @ 'ow'

harleyd · 27/05/2009 11:28

melmog i didnt say i didnt believe you
i was wondering where i was going wrong tbh
i have 4 kids, and find that a med/lge chicken barely makes one meal

Deadflesh - if you are a Vegan that I would say you are the only person on here who does have the right to preach.

I detest cruelty to animals, however my view is some animals in this world are bred for eating. I might not like the way they are kept, but this is how it is. I buy free range eggs but thats it. If free range meat was cheaper than it is I would buy that. However keeping a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs is more important to me than how an animal bred for eating is kept.

"Or who buy nothing but organic food and then 200 B&H."

Bugger off and keep your beak out of my business!

harleyd · 27/05/2009 11:31

lola has no kids?

omng lola, take my 4 for a week and see how you manage feeding them on a budget...i do manage to buy free range, but there are a lot of people worse off than me...how dare you suggest they go without

3rdandBird · 27/05/2009 11:32

I often wonder that about myself actually. I am at the checkout with two kids with me and don't have any fruit and veg in my trolly at all. It's because i buy it from the green groucers but people don't know that so must be thinking i never feed my kids fruit and veg!

Gorionine · 27/05/2009 11:32

3rdandBird, yes you are right , you should indeed hide!

Reality, i do know a lot of people who do not buy fruit and veg in the supermarket but get a box of delivwered weekly by a local farmer, they obviously would not have fruit and veg in their trolley. It does not mean that they do not eat any!

I think people judge a bit fast on this thread!

gingernutlover · 27/05/2009 11:33

i have now read the thread

yes there are lots of ideas on cheap meals, I know they are nice becasue I make them - still not easy to feed a family of 3 on a budget of £50 a week though, so yes I buy cheap eggs and cheap chicken.

we dont eat them very often

The £50 a week includes pet food and all cleaning products too - so honestly it is tight

If I didnt have a massive childcare bill then maybe ....

lovelyboy · 27/05/2009 11:33

Just off to eat some turkey twizlers!!!!

EffieGadsby · 27/05/2009 11:33

YANBU at all. Ethical treatment of animals is important in a civilised society; people don't have a right to eat meat at a cost to animals' welfare.

It's very easy to eat less meat and adhere to a budget. Consumers are too fussy about the type of cuts they'll buy - battery chicken breasts are comparable in price to free range legs and thighs, but for some reason people get squeamish about dark meat. I eat meat once a fortnight or so, and I enjoy it enormously, but I will not buy battery meats to enable myself to eat meat more frequently.

Lola doesn't have children??!!
Well I think it's a bit rich criticising how people spend a "family" budget.

Gorionine · 27/05/2009 11:36

LOL @ Jumpingbeans!

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 27/05/2009 11:37

That's a joke right, jumpingbeans?

How about the cruel conditions that mushrooms have to endure? They are kept in the dark, fed on shit, then ripped out of the ground without so much a thought for the fun-guy it once was (sob)

See what I did there?

harleyd · 27/05/2009 11:40

now that was bad
