She is so COOL!

Anatomist. Medical Doctor. Archaeologist. Lecturer. Traveller. Slightly grungy indy girl. Usually someone that multitalented really gets on my tits, but she seems very - well, sweet.

And she gets to play with such nice things too. She's just been fondling a Neanderthal dildo on BBC2.

I know, she is very lovely indeed. And how a grown woman can carry off that tying two strands of hair back a la primary school I do not know, but she makes it work.

(Is she really a medical doc, though? I thought she was an archaeologist.)

Missed the Neanderthal dildo - dh was yapping - tell me more?!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/05/2009 22:50

I agree, she is fab. She can also paint really well.
As you say, normally hugely annoying when someone is that talented but she is just so nice!

Babbity · 24/05/2009 22:58

She has a medical degree but AFAIK either never worked as a doctor, or did for a very short time before going back to anatomy and from there, into archaeology.

Tinker · 24/05/2009 23:01

She's a bit dull though isn't she? Bland.

mumblecrumble · 24/05/2009 23:02

I love her too!!!

Paolosgirl · 24/05/2009 23:04

She annoys the living daylights out of me for some reason - so much so that she is now on my Hazel Blears/Miquita Oliver/Heather Mills/Catherine Zeta Jones list. Grrrr...

madlentileater · 24/05/2009 23:05

brill programme, I wish I had seen the others.

KayHarkerDoesNotSimper · 24/05/2009 23:09

oh yes, wasn't she fab? Really enjoyed the programme, and she was just the sort of girl I had mooning crushes over in uni.

MamaHobgoblin · 25/05/2009 09:59

Sorry, went to bed!

Edam, Neanderthal dildo was a stone artefact with - if you squint your eyes a bit - a hint of a bell-end at one end. Actually, I think it probably is meant to be phallic. (am archy-type myself) But maybe not a dildo. It made AR go a bit .

Like her hair too, and I don't think I could get away with that style any more, either.

She might not practice on patients, but is still a medical doctor, and finds time to research and publish on anatomical stuff. And lecture.

Thing is, being a frustrated ex-archaeologist myself, I tend to get very grumpy and at this sort of 'media whore' (charming term used by disgruntled academics towards those who've struck out and made it into telly) but I can't hold anything against her. She's just very personable and cool!

Am horrified at the suggestion of a comparison with Heather Mills, Paolosgirl!

One of my friends is a field archaeologist (sadly has developed a bad back which makes digging impractical). Doesn't resent the Time Team lot or Dr Alice at all - just feels a bit wistful.

He'd be jolly good on TV, is tall, dark and handsome in a Bryonic way. (Is also manic depressive so don't even think about forming a queue!)

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 25/05/2009 11:43

I've actually worked with her on some things and she really is as nice as she seems. Very personable, bright and friendly.

My DH has a huuuge crush on her!

ProfYaffle · 25/05/2009 11:50

I have such a crush on her, am quite embaressed to admit it! Can't believe how young she looks to have done all this stuff.

MrsJamin · 25/05/2009 11:57

ooh we spotted her in bristol on saturday, she looks nice in the flesh too. I do wonder whether she'd have got the tv series had she looked like susan boyle though

Paolosgirl · 25/05/2009 12:24

MrsJamin - you've just explained my irrational dislike of her (and her tight vest tops...)

PuppyMonkey · 25/05/2009 12:28

I think she's terrible. And that programme is awful too. I saw the first episode and was PMSL at how shit it was.

"What's that sound? A hyena? Lions?"
Er, no. A cow. It sounded like.

And the graphics were very bad.

phdlife · 25/05/2009 12:35

my academic side totally has a crush.

the rest of me thinks she's one of those girls who was always far too coolly competeny to speak to the likes of me.

phdlife · 25/05/2009 12:36

competent

and I think I've just proved my own point

duchesse · 25/05/2009 12:41

I think she is spear-heading the new Horizon school of science programmes- you know, the ones where they pose a bleeding obvious question at the beginning that could be answered in 5 mn by someone with a passing knowledge of the subject, and then spend 55 minutes spinning it out. I always feel so cheated by them. And for that I cannot forgive her, no matter how grungy she is. And also, she seems to be spending a lot more time on moisturising than she used to.

Tinker · 25/05/2009 12:47

Oh, exactly duchesse. Was saying that while watching it. "Just get to the bleeding point"

Paolosgirl · 25/05/2009 12:50

I loved the programme the other week in which she questionned an elderly Chinese professor who had been studying skulls pretty much all his adult life! He was very diplomatic in his rejection of her theory, I thought

bronze · 25/05/2009 12:54

I was watching a time team the other day where she wasn't even the chief osteoarchaeologist. It was quite nice seeing how far shes come.
She may be pretty and annoyingly competent but give her her due she wouldn't be where she is now without a hell of a lot of work.

Paolosgirl · 25/05/2009 12:59

Do you think that she would have come this far if she didn't look the way she did, regardless of how hard she worked?

She's the archaeological equivalent of Charlie Dimmock.

belgo · 25/05/2009 12:59

Just watching the first episode of The Human Body, the one where she is searching for place where the human race began.

Just one question: walking in 30°-40°C heat for hours, and she never wears a hat? Or sunglasses?

Jux · 25/05/2009 13:06

I think she's fun and I enjoy watching her programmes. She is intelligent, and of course she's 'tellygenic' and that's a major reason why she's doing these programmes; but the programmes are interesting and informative and the fact that she's a pretty girl doesn't take away from that.

My real crush is for Susan Greenfield.
