to wonder how the funkity flick (sorry, trying not to swear on title but struggling) they came up with with this estimated electricity bill/reading??

so we moved into MQs on 13th March (MQs = Married Quarters for the families of service personnel)

And today we got our first bill.

They have the correct meter reading for when we moved in.

They have estimated that between then and 9th May we have used £902.18 of electricity!

How?

Who would use that much?

Do they think I have a full fairground in my (modest) back garden?

Do they think I am running extension leads into the playing fields to run an acre of bouncy castles?

Do they think that I am welding day and night to make a huge stainless steel sculpture in tribute to my mooncup and it's place in my fango life?

How the feck would anyone ever use that much??

(I have calculated using the rates on the bill and the correct reading as of today and even using the higher rate of the two rates it can't be more than £100)

Your suggestions please.

I know bills are boring - but wondered how anyone could use that much

pmsl!!!!!!!!!! I thought it was bad when my electric company estimated that we used £840 in 3 months.... apparently we had used more units in 3 months that the previous 9 months

onagar · 13/05/2009 23:20

I hope you have informed them of the correct reading. That sounds like someone misplaced the decimal point.

Since you did say 'service personnel' I'm wondering if tanks and fighter planes are rechargable and someone is sneaking in and plugging a cable in while you're not looking

BunnyAndJoon · 13/05/2009 23:21

How is your BIL? (caught thread where he was breathless recently but lost it again)

But again I ask HOW?

How could you?

erm

I could be providing the lighting for the sunday league footy matches I guess?

Oh we had one of these.

What not to do is let them into your flat to whip out the meter on the basis that you're "due an upgrade" while you're still disputing the bill. Yes, it seems obvious now...

We paid it off over the following 12 months and they wouldn't budge. Even though it would have been impossible for us to have spent that much.

I think we were unlucky though. And stupid.

smallchange · 13/05/2009 23:25

In my wilder moments I did suspect the people downstairs of hooking up a cable through the ceiling

Joe90 · 13/05/2009 23:28

Could they be presuming the meter is metric when it is still imperial. I saw a Watchdog programme that showed how some electric companies had been that thick!

BunnyAndJoon · 13/05/2009 23:32

They have the correct reading for the start of our stay.

They just have a HUGE figure estimated for how much we used since then

Maybe the previous tennants were profligate with their electricity

BIL is ok, back home.

I never worked out how they got it sooooo wrong, I gave them the correct reading and the bill dropped loads...

BunnyAndJoon · 13/05/2009 23:50

Glad Peter is OK

Right off to bed

Have just spoken to them.

Given correct reading

They are sending out a new bill for £74.97

I am just astounded that they could estimate that we used that much. I would hate some vulnerable person to get an estimated bill like that!

Not sure what the woman thought when I opened the conversation with "You appear to have sent me a comedy electricity bill!"

I think you would have to be growing things in your loft to run up that amount
