To think this is inappropriate?

My cat has gone missing. She has been gone for two days now and we are devastated. I posted my Facebook status as something about my cat has gone missing and anyone near where I live, keep an eye out, and then I posted her description.

A couple of friends commented saying that they were sorry to hear so I posted a comment something along the lines of,

'Thanks, I'm really upset. My mum is absolutely devastated. Just hope we find her '

Then someone who I haven't seen since last year and before that not since leaving uni three years ago commented saying something like,

'I've seen her, well saw her...she was tasty'.

I thought that was really inappropriate and it has just really upset me.

Am I being unreasonable and really over sensitive? I have been imagining all sorts of things since she went and can't see us getting her back now. It just seems a highly inappropriate thing to say to someone, particularly when I just said how upset we all are about it!

< sigh >

get a grip

or stop using facebook

MummyDragon · 13/05/2009 18:56

YANBU, it was probably incredibly funny to the person who wrote it, and also to their teenage friends, but obviously very insensitive. I hope you do get her back. (The cat, that is, although I suppose I mean the friend too, really!)

Tamarto · 13/05/2009 18:57

I hate facebook

laza222 · 13/05/2009 18:57

Well I take it you think I am being unreasonable then.

i really think that you are being oversensitive.it is facebook. not group therapy. people tke the p*ss.people might not get it if they are not pet people . i am sorry your cat has gone missing and i hope she turns up but you really need to take a deep breath and get some perspective.

wolfnipplechips · 13/05/2009 18:58

when a friend of ours announced there dog had died on theirs somebody wrote "its over rover". You have to expect these childish comments on facebook but yanbu to be upset.

laza222 · 13/05/2009 18:58

Sorry, that was aimed at Anyfucker.

Thanks MummyDragon.

He's actually in his late 20s!

I jsut really want to know if I am being silly as I know I am going to end up having a good moan about it when DP gets home and want some opinions. He was always a closer friend of DP than me.

no not unreasonable laza

just naive if you think some smart-arse is not going to make a snide comment if you post details about a lost cat on FB

FB is the work of the devil

LobstersLass · 13/05/2009 18:59

Just delete the comment and move on. Life is to short to get upset about Facebook comments.

LobstersLass · 13/05/2009 18:59

too

Hulababy · 13/05/2009 19:00

Yes it is inappropriate and distasteful. But then a lot of FB stuff can be. Says more about that person than you. I'd just delete the message from your page.

wotulookinat · 13/05/2009 19:00

Delete it and ignore it.

He never was really a smart arse at uni! He was actually a very quite lad, bit of a stoner which may be why I guess! He clearly just has very little idea of sensitivity!

Deleting comment!

quiet!

Amandoh · 13/05/2009 19:04

I'm so sorry to hear your cat has gone missing and I hope you find her.

I imagine the comment was made lightheartedly and the person responsible would probably be mortified if they thought it had upset you further. Some humour just doesn't translate well over the internet.

BTW: One of our cats was missing for weeks! He had moved into the house that backs onto our garden. He's still living there now and just pops "home" every now again to piss up our hallway.

laza222 · 13/05/2009 19:07

Thanks amandoh. I have had a couple of people say that their cat has gone missing for weeks and has eventually turned up. Hopefully it will happen in this case! The silly thing did always stray a bit too far.

Meant to say thank you to everyone above as well. I am a sensitive soul and TBH, anyone who hasn't got that about me by now can probably do with deleting from my Facebook as they clearly don't know me as well as I thought!

ChippingIn · 13/05/2009 19:13

I hope your cat comes home soon x

I was in bits when mine went missing (found the silly sod in someone's garage!!) and would be very upset by someone making that comment. I'd of sent a choice message and deleted him immediately. Wanker.

Agree that FB is the work of the devil though!

charitygirl · 13/05/2009 19:20

Definitely an insensitive comment.

But AIBU to think that Facebook is infantilising the nation?

AnyFucker · 13/05/2009 19:58

I agree charitygirl

it is fecking juvenile bollocks

crokky · 13/05/2009 20:05

I'm sorry your cat is missing.

I would quit facebook though!

CarmenSanDiego · 13/05/2009 20:11

What I struggle with on facebook is there is no compartmentalising. On livejournal for example, you can set up different filters so different groups of people see different topics you write about. On facebook everyone sees everything. Most people now have fairly diverse mixes of family, friends and coworkers. Post about something sensitive and no-so-close friends may take the piss. Joke about something and mil takes offence.

I think sadly if you use facebook in this way, you have to have a fairly thick skin and be willing to argue if you think someone says something unpleasant. Why not just comment back that their timing is poor and they upset you? It may make you feel better and you may get an apology. If not, you get the satisfaction of unfriending someone who is a prat.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/05/2009 20:27

A message of hope, we have just returned my sisters neighbours cat, who went missing October 31st last year.

junglist1 · 13/05/2009 20:51

It's not a funny comment unless you're about 5. My pets are part of my family.
