to think that posters who self-importantly "call 'troll'!" at perfectly realistic thread scenarios, are the bane of Mumsnet?

If there is a thread that deals with something quite likely and pertinent to quite a few people's lives, who cares that you personally don't think it 'rings true'? Not everyone lives the same kind of life as you.

Just don't contribute! If you're that bored, don't bore me.

Troll.

Gorionine · 09/05/2009 10:18

trip... trap...

No, I actually agree with you PadDad.

pooka · 09/05/2009 10:18

YANBU.

It's the Miss Marple syndrome that really irritates me. Like someone is expecting congratulations and added posting points for being able to see a troll. If you're right, then usually most other people can see it might be a troll. If you're wrong, then you're doing someone genuine a massive disservice and potentially hurting them.

In most cases I think it is better to keep schtum. Obviously if you see people being drawn into offering personal details/cash, then contact mumsnet HQ.

pinkstarfish · 09/05/2009 10:40

Hear Hear!

As a reasonably new poster, I've been accused of being a troll on one of my recent posts. It irritates me so much as well as it being rude and hurtful.

MrsMagooo · 09/05/2009 10:43

Damn it - beat me to it whodathoughtit

Absolutely

Unless something is clearly bizare (that poster who went to a tropical island whilst baby was supposedly in SCBU...) I just try and give sensible advice; if its a hoaxer, well thats better than calling troll when someone needs help IMO

iMissEdith · 09/05/2009 10:51

It's not only true of those sorts of threads either - the possibly serious ones, I mean.

There are loads of killjoys who, rather than laugh or join in a pissing about troll thread, like to say Troll! Troll! ME ME MEEEEE I said it first I'm dead clever innit.

Dull fuckers.

Completely agree, OP.

Tidey · 09/05/2009 10:51

I do always find it odd when people check up on someone, and if it's their first post they're immediately suspicious that it might be a troll. It stands to reason that everyone who uses this site had to make a first post at some point!

Lots of people find this site and ask for advice on their first post. They shouldn't necessarily have to make a hundred posts about their pets and what type of ham they prefer before asking the question they wanted to ask!

Peachy · 09/05/2009 10:57

Mind you I was called a troll a few months back, I am OLD LOL. made me , might have made me run had I been new or worried though

Just join in a thread or leave it be, poeple! If you're genuinely owrried about a thread report it.

PadDad · 09/05/2009 10:58

Exactly Tidey.

And it's the phrase, "I'm calling troll...".

So smug.

Also, loads of people (myself included) have had to change names for a thread if we think we (or our children) would be too easily identifiable. It's very wearying to have to do the whole ''I am regular, I am not a troll, I know all about fruitshoots and bats and etc....''

Tidey · 09/05/2009 11:11

So true mollyroger. It's like people have to give an MN password to prove their credentials.

I don't think I've ever felt the need to do a search on someone's name to see if they've stuck to the same story over all their posts. I'd have to be really bored to bother.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 09/05/2009 11:53

LOL
YANBU

potatofactory · 09/05/2009 11:57

I completely agree.

I want to know why trolls are called trolls.

ALSO, I think trolls themselves are pretty bloody boring too. I have seen one funny one (once)

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 09/05/2009 12:02

Totally agree.

I was accused of being a troll on my very first thread. Purely because I said I liked MN. I mean, if that is so unbelievable then why are the rest of them here?

cornsilk · 09/05/2009 12:04

There have been some posters who have described issues which have drawn other posters in over a period of time. Perhaps that's why posters sometimes express the opinion that something doesn't 'ring true.'

pinkstarfish · 09/05/2009 12:04

"It is thought to be a truncation of the phrase trolling for suckers, itself derived from the fishing technique of slowly dragging a bait through water, known as trolling. The word also evokes the trolls portrayed in Scandinavian folklore and children's tales as they are often obnoxious creatures bent on mischief and wickedness"

EvenBetaDad · 09/05/2009 12:06

LadyPink - I had the same experience as you on my first thread.

I guess the problem is that sometimes people tend to come on with an 'extreme' issue because it is very important to them and provides the motivation to sign up.

pagwatch · 09/05/2009 12:08

I agree - although I did once politely suggest that I was finding the thread puzzling and unlikely and imediately got shouted at as a 'troll - shouter'

So if troll shouters are the bane of mumsnet can those who shout 'troll shouter' be next in line for the title?

southeastastra · 09/05/2009 12:09

i find it depressing that so much on mn now just discusses mn.

Gorionine · 09/05/2009 12:20

I was not called a troll on my first thread, but I was well and truely flamed! Charcoaled to be precise!

potatofactory · 09/05/2009 14:02

thank you pinkstarfish

Bucharest · 09/05/2009 14:05

Tbh, MN isn't as bad as pinkandfluffy.com(sic) where I used to post, which had moderators actually asking new posters for scan pics as evidence of their existence...Hysteria abounds elsewhere in cyberspace, believe me....
But no, YANBUatall.
