To think that a headmistress should understand the difference between 'contains prawns' and 'prawn flavoured'?

Prawn cocktail crisps are banned at my daughters' school 'because of children with shellfish allergies'. Don't misunderstand - I am totally in favour of not endangering people's lives by exposing them to substances they are allergic to! But there are no prawns in prawn cocktail flavour crisps. There are no animal products at all - it says on the packet 'suitable for vegetarians'. It's just a name. There are no more prawns in those crisps than there are monsters in Monster Munch. Now, I did wonder if there were some brands that really do have prawn in. But no - she specifically mentioned Skips as being forbidden in her latest letter. They're vegetarian suitable too! Shouldn't a headmistress be able to read an ingredients list? I am keeping to the ban but it makes me angry to see such bad logic from a teacher.

dumbass! I'd tell her if I were you...

ProstetnicVogonJeltz · 05/05/2009 22:08

they're allowed crisps????!!!! blimey. how liberal.

HairyMuff · 05/05/2009 22:09

I'd tell her too.

seeker · 05/05/2009 22:11

I'm imagining the reverse of this thread "AIBU to be outraged that the Head of our school seems to spend all her time reading packaging to hunt out possible allergens - she should be doing her proper job of managing the school FFS!!"

fryalot · 05/05/2009 22:12

we-ell.... obviously she should know this.

but... perhaps the parent of the child with the allergy has specified that prawn cocktail flavoured crisps are not allowed because she either doesn't know or doesn't want to risk it.

Perhaps the head has specifically mentioned it again because people are ignoring the ban because they know that there aren't any prawns in prawn cocktail crisps and the mother of the child is getting antsy.

maybe.

psychomum5 · 05/05/2009 22:12

point it out. she needs educating

seriously tho, this is why there are so many confusions about allergies, because people make up half the 'facts' about them.

tis like someone being allergic to nuts, and saying they cannot have coconut and nutmeg (neither connected to nuts bar having them in their name, like prawn cocktail crisps)

myredcardigan · 05/05/2009 22:14

Prawn cocktail crisps are evil though. Full of shit but, umm, no actual prawns, no.

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 22:14

pmsl at monsters in monster munch

send her in with a packet of Space Invaders, that'll shit them up

junglist1 · 05/05/2009 22:15

.......BOF, I have a thread explaining all in chat.

got an email that corrupted my laptop , then got the laptop back only for the battery to overheat and burn me, and also melt the inside of the machine slightly.

DH rang Dell today, I am able to use laptop without the battery, plus the battery is one of a load recalled last year for exploding issues, so they are sorting it for free

am back for now, until I get the laptop sorted, altho only in the evening as we started our extension clearout today, and am knocking buildings down tomorrow

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 22:20

I am clearly not killed by DH or MIL tho (altho MIL likes me, tis my aunt we need to watch........)

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 22:21

Christ, vegetarian is one thing but there's no excuse for Bisto

MeMySonAndI · 05/05/2009 22:22

Is it really worth the effort to educate a head teacher on the vegetarian nature of prawn flavoured crisps? I would not go into so much trouble for my child to have lunchbox that not only contains crisps but that they are covered in artificial flavourings (Monosodium Glutamate anyone? makes wonders to increase children's hyperactivity )

BitOfFun · 05/05/2009 22:23

Ah yes, I get some evil MILS on here mixed up...

TrinityIsLovingHerLittleRhino · 05/05/2009 22:24

did you know that until recently(and it may still be true) that the only non vegetarian walkers crisps were the cheese and onion ones

saintmaybe · 05/05/2009 22:25

But, yuck, they're full of msg. Isn't that bad for kids' brains? It's vile stuff.

Thunderduck · 05/05/2009 22:25

There's no MSG in Skips now I believe. A lot of crisp packets now have No MSG displayed on the front.

Greensneeze · 05/05/2009 22:26

Trinity, that's no surprise to me. There's no way they could achieve that distinctive tang without the use of actual feet
