...to have saved his life?

Yesterday, in car with DC2 aged 3 he's sucking on one of those Drumstick Lollies.

He looks at me holding the 'lolly less' stick in his hand.

I jokingly muse, 'You haven't got the whole Drumstick in your mouth have you?', to which he starts to gag.

I see the whole chewy sweet head towards the rear of his mouth, his cheeks start to suck in and loads of saliva starts pouring out of his mouth.

'Shit, shit, shit', I start to cry and whack him hard between the shoulder blades.

More saliva and I see the edge of the sweet, I stick my finger with the longest fingernail into his mouth, hook the sweet and manage to drag it out.

I'm in shock looking at the huge sweet in my hand lying in a puddle of my baby's spit.

Then with his first breath he says, nay shouts, 'Give it back, give it back, it's mine, it's mine, I want it!!!'

So, was I unreasonable?

what a delightful allegory for motherhood

I definitely would have had the same reponse from my lolly obsessed DS! Were you driving? What a nightmare!

I bet your heart was beating madly for ages after.

DD did something similar. She just started crying hysterically pointing at her mouth, unable to speak, turning red in the face, hardly able to draw breath she was so beside herself. Turned out she had swallowed a pink jewel heart thing (like you use for arts and crafts) and the hysterics was because she wanted it back

I've gone back to cutting all my DC's grapes in half as DC1 (who is 6) choked badly on one a few weeks ago. The younger DC are fine about this but she says "It makes me feel babyish, I want them whole."
We can never, ever win and may as well just get used to it!
I have sympathy for the choking episode; I had to turn her upside down to get it out (whilst telling DC2 to bring me the phone, as 999 would have been next port of call) and although it worked, I was shaking for several hours afterwards and had trouble sleeping.
