to want to warn others of the danger microwaves pose to children after something dd1 did?

I came downstairs yesterday morning to my 3yo dd1 microwaving a large beaker of water. Luckily I got there in time before it had heated and had got it out. I dread to think what could have happened if she had heated the water and spilt it getting it out.
She managed to use a toilet stool (carried downstairs) to reach the microwave.
We now have a high stair gate across the kitchen door!

at least it wasn't a can of baked beans!

Dillydaydreamer · 26/04/2009 12:40

Yes LOL!

my sister microwaved a hot cross bun once to defrost it

She set it for 100:00 - one hundred minutes.....! She meant to do it for 1 minute!

Our parents were on holiday and all of a sudden flames were coming out of the microwave!

We threw the door open, opened the back door and chucked the fire-ball in the garden

APerson · 26/04/2009 12:49

why was a 3 yr old downstairs in the kitchen by herself?

bluebump · 26/04/2009 12:54

My friend as a child microwaved her capri sun as it had been stored in the fridge and was too cold. Cue a big bang followed by a big black smoky hole in her microwave door!

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 12:55

APerson - because 3yr old have a knack of getting downstairs in the morning without paretn

Ronaldinhio · 26/04/2009 12:56

I once microwaved an egg

That's not to be recommended

lolianja · 26/04/2009 12:56

From what Dilly said, presumably she managed to get past the babygate, APerson. Unfortunate but hardly the OP's fault.

Ronaldinhio · 26/04/2009 12:57

actually good point APerson

momentarily unsupervised child alert

thanks! that one almost passed me by

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 26/04/2009 12:58

Unplug the microwave unless you are usiing it and hide the plug/wire behind the actual thing.

MuffinBaker · 26/04/2009 13:00

My son microwaved his Milo torch.

Child lock was set. Should have contacted the shop really.

Fire ball wasn't the word.

It was the first time I had left him alone to go to the upstairs loo.

or a forgotten fork on plate to warm the dinner up.

or the most unexpected when the gold painted (I thought) mug turns out actually to have that proper gold leaf stuff around the rim and you put it in the microwave...............

sockmonkey · 26/04/2009 13:07

I cannot make microwave popcorn. Done it 3 times. Each time the microwave has set on fire.
Glad you caught DD in time. They are sneeky aren't they?

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 13:08

ooooooooo sock - you've made me want microwave popcorn now - haven't had it for aaaaaaaaaaages.

ChasingSquirrels · 26/04/2009 13:09

I have started switching everything off (not due to children, due to electricity costs) but don't unplug most things.

spicemonster · 26/04/2009 13:10

why is that any more dangerous than being able to turn on the oven or put the kettle on?

Nighbynight · 26/04/2009 14:10

Unplug everything, and switch electric stove off at the wall. And dont let dd see you doing it!!
3 year olds can be so resourceful, cant they.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/04/2009 14:13

Thanks for advice -- hadn't thought of microwave... Will turn it off at switch.

(for us who can't manage to lock toddlers upstairs )

pastapestofor6 · 26/04/2009 14:20

yes I did the egg thing...gawd what a mess!
my ds3 microwaved daddys brand new i-phone oooops we now have a new microwave with child lock

Dillydaydreamer · 26/04/2009 14:20

APerson Do you have experience of a 3yo Mine is able to open stair gates so she can go unaided to the toilet, while also closing it behind her to stop dd2 going up stairs! The kitchen gate is dd1 proof but don't usually shut it. She has recently started sneaking downstairs in the morning without waking DH or me.
She is very capable of pouring herself a drink of juice.
Thanks for the tips about switching it off at the wall Hadn't thought of that , although I do rely on the clock for time in the mornings

Sorry but pmsl at some of the objects microwaved on this thread although I am sure it wasn't funny at the time

thanks OP for flagging this up. I have a 3 year old ds so we will now be unplugging too!

Nighbynight · 26/04/2009 14:27

this thread makes me glad that we never had a microwave and toddlers together!

When you've unplugged everything, she'll probably drag a chair in there and start getting stuff out of the top cupboards.
And just to warn you in advance, after my children watched the 3 Musketeers, I came into the kitchen one day to find 5 yr old ds1 had got 2 big kitchen knives out of a drawer, was handing one to 3 yr old ds2, and saying "I'll be D'Artagnon, and you be..."

Cadelaide · 26/04/2009 14:28

well I'm pmsl at Ronaldinhio

Sassybeast · 26/04/2009 14:33

Brussel sprouts in the microwave are quite spectacular. Smell a bit though.
