to want to warn others of the danger microwaves pose to children after something dd1 did?

I came downstairs yesterday morning to my 3yo dd1 microwaving a large beaker of water. Luckily I got there in time before it had heated and had got it out. I dread to think what could have happened if she had heated the water and spilt it getting it out.
She managed to use a toilet stool (carried downstairs) to reach the microwave.
We now have a high stair gate across the kitchen door!

oh gosh - yes the big kitchen knifes when unloading the dishwasher - god they're a nightmare aren't they

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:32

LOL Cazza!!!

Our house is new too - everything is just at the right height for a curious 2 year old.

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 21:34

you know the most worrying thing in this house is the front door.....it has a nightlatch (Upvc door) on the very fancy smancy multilock - which means that it can be opened from the inside when unlocked, but you need a key to open from the outside...........

he hasn't shut me out yet - but I do try and remember to take the key with me when I put rubbish in the bin just incase

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:38

Oh yes, I remember being locked out after I'd been out to put the rubbish in the wheeliebin by DS1 when he was about 5. He thought it was very funny, then got bored and wandered off to watch TV with his sister (who was 3 at the time), leaving me standing outside in the freezing cold, dying for a wee and hammering on the door for what seemed like an eternity whilst they forgot where I was.

Actually, I'm going to stop sharing my stories I think - I sound dangerous.

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 21:39

no you don't sound dangerous - you sound normal

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:45

Thank you!

Noonki · 26/04/2009 21:48

paolo ...you are not alone. I got shut out by DS1 (aged 19 months) holding 3 day old DS2 in my arms.

I had to ring the local swimming pool to get the attendant to find DH in the pool and get him to come home.

Obviously I was wearing PJS (with postnatal tummy hanging out - nice) and my cm and midwife both turned up to see my chaos.

The dogs nearly gave the midwife a heart attack as they were in the backgarden and she tried to climb over the fence to see if the back door was open.

I still blush when I think about it!

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:51

LOL Noonki!

Well, it's funny in the telling - not so funny for you then, I'm sure!

Noonki · 26/04/2009 22:08

I've got over it now..nearly two years on!

Cazzaben · 26/04/2009 22:37

God these stories are making me PMSL!!!

Just goes to show that we are all normal humans who make mistakes. Paolosgirl you are one of these normal people!! x
PMSL at postnatal tummy hanging out!!! LOL

Once put DS2 down to nap,(in his growbag) and went downstairs. Cue DS2 starting to cry. I ignored him for a couple of minutes, hoping he would just settle. Went up to check when he didn't calm down, and he'd climbed onto the end of his cot, and shimmied over to windowsill where he got stuck.
What is it with growbags & adventurous babies? He could climb out of his cot in his by about 11 months.

Morloth · 27/04/2009 13:01

Sockmonkey I think they actually provide grip for getting out of the cot. I know DS used to use the aforementioned bar (and earlier cast) as a leverage weight to help him get into all sorts of trouble.

Ledodgy · 27/04/2009 13:05

Our microwave is high up but both the microwave and oven have child lock things on them that they came with.

ChippingIn · 28/04/2009 02:01

Dilly clearly a negligent and crap parent for leaving a 3 yo alone for a nano second

NOT

The solution, of course, is to have tall builders fit the kitchen, I can barely reach the microwave!!!

Luckily have 2 LO's who just don't bother trying to open or climb over the stairgate or to do random things really - must remember to count my blessings much, much more frequently!!! Hats off to those of you with 'adventurous' children!!

Anifrangapani · 28/04/2009 06:50

I must remember to wake up when the kids get up...... That way they won't make themselves toast using the HOT HOT HOT toaster, sharp knife for cutting the salami for sandwiches or thhose nast glass glasses. Not to mention the microwave.

I was quite proud to find my DD explaining to DS that the egg exploded because the air had nowhere to go when it got bigger as it got really hot. I was not so pleased to have to clean the egg off the microwave.

ProfYaffle · 28/04/2009 07:05

Can I just boast about dd2? She figured out how to microwave a box of raisens before she was 2!

I heard her dragging a kitchen chair around but assumed she was raiding the fruit bowl as she usually does, went into the kitchen just as she was opening the microwave door and reaching for the smouldering, popping, hissing box. Thank God we've got a small kitchen and I was over there in 2 strides.

Dillydaydreamer · 28/04/2009 20:08

Sorry I haven't been back for a while, had loads of studying the last 2 days

I am finding it hilarious reading about all the little misdemeanors LOL At least I know I am not there are other crap parents like me!

Aperson I bf, didn't co-sleep with 1 but did the other (dd2) Bottle fed DD1. Am reasonably well educated and in the middle of a degree module critical research appraisal, married and over 30 Which box should I dive into iyho? Chav? No wrong clothes, Hippie? No as I don't smoke pot or wear the right clothes.

BTW As a CM my home has been checked for Health and Safety by OFSTED What they should have done was checked the personalities of the children

DD1 is was one of the children who didn't do anything and has been getting downstairs in the mornings for 6mths or more, we used to hear her but recently she has been stealth like LOL Perhaps I shall install a lazer beam across her bedroom door with an alarm on it!
