to want to warn others of the danger microwaves pose to children after something dd1 did?

I came downstairs yesterday morning to my 3yo dd1 microwaving a large beaker of water. Luckily I got there in time before it had heated and had got it out. I dread to think what could have happened if she had heated the water and spilt it getting it out.
She managed to use a toilet stool (carried downstairs) to reach the microwave.
We now have a high stair gate across the kitchen door!

not a microwave one, but ds1 managed to toast a plastic ghost the other week. It disintegrated into millions of pieces of molten plastic and turned the air foggy. Bloody thing managed to scatter throughout the house. Cue frantic hoovering and window opening from me.

Toaster is now unplugged. We haven't had a microwave incident but I'm sure it's just a matter of time..

We got rid of our microwave after the kids blew it up! They were 3 and 4, could open stairgates (hence why we had none) and decided to have hot rice crispies - would have been fine but they left the spoon in the bowl.

Also I remeber my son aged 18months unscrtewing the scrtews on the door handle that his dad had left lying around (bad parent!)

Anyway off to eat my lentils, smoke my pot, all whilst sat in my trackies and stilletos......

Perhaps Aperson is just abit miffed that her child isnt obviously at the G&T stage

Sassybeast · 26/04/2009 20:27

How do I work out if I'm a chav or a hippy ? I buy Boden but shop in Lidl. And interesting point about BF - that makes you sound very ratinal and reasonable

DuffyFluckling · 26/04/2009 20:28

Good op.

I was a bit taken aback when my dd carefully put a toy in the microwave and turned it on (one push of one button). Fortunately I was sitting in the kitchen and no harm done. We always unplug it now (or did, until we got rid of it).

They can always do so much more than you give them credit for and we can't all anticipate every single thing.

Well I've taken on board your thoughts aperson so earlier I taught my boys how to use the microwave safely... Just in case I'm too busy spreading peace and love

OR GOD FORBID

I'm doing housework/having a wee/sorting DS2 out...

Ooo rasputin me too! I am actually wearing a maxi dress as I type, the baby is downstairs with OH while he does the washing up and I am watching the kids play on the green in their Sports.com trackies!

So hippy, lazy and chav all wrapped up in one package.

I was a bit confused by Aperson. She seems perturbed that children are allowed out of their parents' sight BUT disaproves of children actually being with their parents at bedtime

I am also pretty sure that my stair gate's instructions said they should not be used for children over 24 months and I have no use for a baby alarm as I am always in earshot.

So ner!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 26/04/2009 20:47

This thread is schocking for me because I never ever had to worry about these things as dd1 is one of these children that will never touch what she shouldn't touch. she's 3.9 btw. Once you tell her something that is it. Therefore I'm at my naivety and surprise at all the things one should do to make home safer. (obviously know about the plug - never ever put finger there - stairgates).

Now I thank you OP for this thread as DD2 seems made of a different paste somehow and all this advice will def be useful! Unbelievable what LOs can be up to!!

Aperson is a troll obviously and hopefully.

Nighbynight · 26/04/2009 20:48

APerson, you have just posted a mumsnet classic actually. People will say "Im not a troll, I know about tablecloths, and grapes, and moldies and I was there when aPerson blew a gasket about crap parenting"

juneybean · 26/04/2009 20:56

LOL once when I was about 13, I microwaved some super noodles....and forgot the water....oh the smelllll

Insanity · 26/04/2009 20:57

Wonder what Aperson would make of this...

My son who at the time had just turned 2, could open stairgates and would go downstairs in the morning without waking us. (He also used to eat the yoghurts out the fridge and butter the loaf of bread )

One morning (6.45am to be precise) I went downstairs as I heard him up. The phone was off the hook and lying on the chair (which by the way was on a shelf out of his reach). I thought nothing of it and put the phone back on the hook, and made myself a cup of tea. Whilst stirring my tea my ds excitedly told me a policeman was coming to his house! 10 seconds later the phone rang, and it was a very concerned WPC on the phone who seemed very pleased to hear my voice!

Turned out my son had been having a good old chat with the 999 operater and had said that he couldnt wake his mummy. Apparantly if I hadnt answered the phone I would have had the police banging on the door.

The WPC was completely understanding and agreed that 6.45am was not me lying in my bed and neglecting my child. Nor, I am hoping did she think I was a chav, drunk or lazy!

ThingOne · 26/04/2009 21:00

I remember the joyous, easy days of my first 14 month old. Apart from the shocking lack of sleep coming from breastfeeding a co-sleeping milk monster, of course. Oh dear. Have I just outed myself as a crap mum?

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:02

I was working in the garden today and my 2 year old was in and out of the house on his own....

Ah, what a neglectful third time mother I am!

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 21:05

pah paolo - I've been sat in the house - while my 23 month old has gone in and out of the garden all Easter holidays (and this last week too )

MadamAnt · 26/04/2009 21:11

When DD was two she would sneak into bed with us in the morning with a smattering of chocolate biscuit crumbs around her chops having silently climbed over the stairgate on her bedroom door, gone downstairs, climbed over the another stairgate, and climbed up onto the very high worktops using nowt but grippy fingers and toes to get into the cupboard.

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:16

No, mention away, FAQ! My 2 year old was brought back home last week by a kindly neighbour who found him wandering in our (very quiet, I should add) cul-de-sac. One of the DC's had left the side gate open and he'd seized the opportunity to explore.

LemonTea · 26/04/2009 21:22

Where has aperson gone? Please come back - this is the funniest thread I've read for a while.
If you come back to shout at us all again, I'm sure even worse better stories will come out about our little daaarrlings.

Noonki · 26/04/2009 21:25

faq - my 23 month old spent this afternoon in the garden ...on his own ... ... we locked him out and went back to bed (not really tempting as it was )

wait til aperson has 3 kids...then we'll see if she lets her three year old downstairs on it's own

hahahahhahaha

FAQinglovely · 26/04/2009 21:26

oh and there was DS1 about 3yrs old made "snow" all over the carpet (and the then brand new TV - I'm talking less than 2 weeks old) using sugar...............

He was then a little darling and tried to clean up his mess............with baby wipes.......leaving the most horrible mess to clean up

paolosgirl · 26/04/2009 21:28

I could also tell you about the time the same 2 year old got hold of a kitchen knife as he was 'helping' me unload the dishwasher, refused to let go and I had to wrestle it from him - or when he found a big bit of glass in a playpark (thanks for thank, you moronic teenager) and tried to pop it in his mouth. Yes, this 2 year old is keeping us on our toes, that is for sure.

I could tell you, but I won't.....

Cazzaben · 26/04/2009 21:29

HEHE paolosgirl my DS1 did the same not so long ago...

He walked straight out of the front door and shut it behind him and walked into our neighbours house and I didnt even realise!!! We had a knock on the door asking if we had lost something!!! In walked DS1 with just his nappy on... (had obviously decided to take his clothes off too)... I was feeding DS2 at the time...

Lucky we know the neighbours and we now use the chain (which he cant reach). I think part of the problem in our house is that because its new all the plug sockets door handles etc are designed for the disabled... For a 1,2 or 3 YO its a huge adventure park!!!!
