Rhubarb is a very fashionable fruit vegetable. All the slebs are eating it in top restaurants. She will be planting some herself in a year or two, she's just behind the times.

What variety was it?

3peasinapod · 24/04/2009 17:19

Kathy

Timperly Early

We are first timers and use alot of rubarb in this house so makes sense to grow some.

Mine is Timperley Early too 3Peas. I only put it in this winter so I haven't eaten any yet but it's got one nice big leaf and another just starting. Fingers crossed it makes it.

Did the rhubarb and custard souffle from Jamie at Home the other day which has just about convinced dh that rhubarb is ok.

Yes the leaves are poisonous but so are lots of common garden plants...

ridingjoker · 24/04/2009 17:52

we had rhubarb when i was little. so much of the bloody stuff we would break stalks off and use them as swords.

i bloody love rhubarb.

eating with it and playing with it

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/04/2009 18:10

Did you get it in stalks and dip them in sugar?

Memories of my sweet Scottish childhood.
I made a rhubarb crumble yesterday and since I am the only crumble eater in the house the second half is all mine HaHa!
We grew it when we had an allotment and it was so easy and so worthwhile cos it aint that cheap.

ridingjoker · 24/04/2009 18:13

oh the sugar dipped rhubarb is still a firm favourite in my family.

TheProvincialLady · 24/04/2009 18:14

Does anyone know if you can grow it in small crappy and dank shaded gardens?

TheProvincialLady · 24/04/2009 18:14

Oh and obviously yanbu!

Thunderduck · 24/04/2009 18:15

I loved to do that Flyme. I'm also Scottish. Sugar in a paper bag then dip it in. It lasted me for most of the afternoon. I think I'd still love to do that.

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/04/2009 18:20

I don't think my teeth are up to it.

ridingjoker · 24/04/2009 18:24

provincial. it used to grow bloody everywhere in our garden. trouble was getting it to stop

TheProvincialLady · 24/04/2009 18:26

So if I go to a garden centre will they have a rhubarb plant I can buy or do I have to sleep with a man at the allotments?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/04/2009 18:28

LOL TheProvincialLady. Mine came from a garden centre but I'm sure there is a healthy trade in rhubarb for sex at the allotments - that is what all those little sheds are for isn't it?

aGalChangedHerName · 24/04/2009 18:31

I am Scottish also and have fond memories of a cup of sugar and rhubarb from my nana. Also used to give us a piece on sugar with butter anyone ever get that??

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/04/2009 18:35

Yes the sugar sanny.
Not from my mum but from one of my friends mum.

paranoidmother · 24/04/2009 18:42

Oh make Rhubarb and Ginger conserve i've just done it and it's lovely. I can even get my DD (4) to eat it and she won't try anything new till about the 5th time.

lisianthus · 24/04/2009 18:42

I love rhubarb Well done on planting it. I don't understand your SIL laughing as I can't think of anything intrinsically funny about this fruit though. Now laughing at TURNIPS I'd understand. [blackadder-style comical turnip smilie]

3peasinapod · 24/04/2009 21:42

My SIL would never dream of growing fruit & Veg, her hands would get dirty. Prefer to buy in a shop. We are hoping to get some chickens soon and i cant wait to see her reaction to that.

paranoidmother
How did you make the conserve?

piscesmoon · 24/04/2009 22:00

I wouldn't let her bother you. It is a great idea and I love rhubarb.
