To be really cross with dds nursery.

Dd 4yo went to nursery today in a summer dress which she has been dying to wear all winter (not much cover)

I packed sun cream and told dd it was there(she loves putting it on) and also dh.

I've just arrived home to find that she is really sunburnt the sun cream isn't in her bag. She says the nursery nurse said she be ok to have a little play out without any on but then forgot to put some on and let her play outside for most of the day.

I'm really careful about her skin she is paler than pale, English rose skin. On all the family holidays we've been on she has never so much changed colour.
I've phoned the manager but i'm rubbish at things like that and didn't really make it clear how cross I am. She apologised but i'm still really pissed off. Ds has been with me all day in the park and he hasn't even a hint of sun.

I know i just find it just so frustrating. Surely its top of their list of dangers on a hot day. Dd is now so whingey and winey and saying her head hurts. She is a drama queen though but i know how rubbish sunburn makes you feel.

When you go in tomorrow remind them about the suncream and there must be something about failing intheir duty of care if they can allow a child to gt sunburnt and not notice...

YANBU. I would want the nursery to implement some staff training around keeping the kids covered and protected. It's a serious mistake that the nursery nurse has made.

Write a formal letter of complaint.

FWIW, DDs nursery had a board up at the front door in the summer, with all the childrens names on and a pen for you to tick whether you'd applied sun cream that morning. They then knew if your child needed any and could top it up/apply it for you if needed (after signing the sppropriate relase forms to let them do this of course!) I found it always worked very well.

YANBU - That is shocking - dd's nursery won't let them out for more than 20 mins atm and we've now received strict instructions to include suncream and hats if its sunny.

After a similar incident with an old nanny I now make sure that putting on suncream is part of the daily getting up and dressed ritual from about easter onwards. Anal I know but I can't bear the thought of my dc getting sunburnt.

To be fair they're usually good this just seems to have been an oversight, they have 2 new staff in her room so maybe thats why.

I'm starting to calm down. I think i'll just go and get her some P20 and apply it before she goes in future.

YANBU but I think you're right in that P20 before she leaves for nursery is probably the way to go, so that at least she has some protection. Really frustrating for you.

Susie, i'm one of those judgey people who is horrified when anybody lets there kids get sunburnt.
I lived in Australia and had to have many moles removed and aged a good 5 years in a year from sunbathing there.

That's outrageous, I would be furious. At dd's nursery they insist everyone provides suncream for their dc, it's all clearly labelled and every child has suncream applied in the morning. Even if you tell them they've already got some on they don't believe you and do it again anyway I would make a formal complaint, they've allowed her to suffer an injury.

Don't get p20 for littlies, get some Ultrasun.

p20 stays sticky for a while and is a pia to apply imho.

Ultrasun has prevented my pale blue (redhead dad, blonde mum = white hair and freckles with translucent skin) DC from getting burned (and tanned when were little and used the highest factor 28)

Marmaduke my children are blue pale too ds is a redhead.

Does ultrasun just need to be applied once?
I've found p20 a faff in the past and it turns white clothes a horrible yellow but needs must.

Ultrasun is once a day, it has a tiny amount of silver glitter (by product rather than a design feature imho) in it so makes skin look fab!

I used it from when DD was 1, I don't like them getting a tan (I let her a bit now she is 9.5).

Once on hols (she was 2.5) I ran out of ultrasun and had to use p20 (noting else available for all day use), horrid sticky nonsense and she had a swimming costme mark after 2 days but had remained perfectly white in the 8 days beforehand.

It is not cheap, but then neither is p20. Well worht it though. The physical sunscreen (Reflex30) is very white, but others fine - the glitter does show up a bit on black clothes.

P20 only protects you from UVB rays not UVA so it allows you to "tan" without burning.

Ok, well a 20 factor Ultrasun says UVA 91%

I recomemend that you should always apply cream to your child before they go into nursery, then leave a bottle to top up throughout the day.

The initial application is likely to protect them enough in most cases, and the alternative is that the staff would be expected to apply cream to every child in the nursery everyday - not really practical or fair!

Cho Cho, i agree and usually would but we woke late and dd had to be there for 7.45 so i told dh to ask them and all so dd to remind them which she did. The bottle is left at the nursery with her name on for the whole summer, Today is the first time she would have needed it so i sent it in.

YANBU but really make sure your kids wear clothes that cover their shoulders - Slip, Slap Slop and all that!

Pis Buin do an all day total sunblock that can be applied before they are dressed in the morning and lasts all day.
