She's just so fracking...ugly.

She can't sing, either.

And she's crap as Mama Ramotswe.

I didn't realise that was Angie! That song rocks, and so does the original it's based on!

Honestly, Spokette. Angie, Alicia and Jill. Who are these hideous, talentless women and what are they doing on our screens?

Walking - I think there's enough info and links on here for you to discover who she is for yourself!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 23/04/2009 11:28

Is she a Scientologist? She's called her new baby Jett which is a classic Scientologist name.

TiggyR · 23/04/2009 14:16

Just watched some of the links as I've never heard her sing before - beautiful voice and ver talented though if I'm honest not really my kind of music. Soul or any music of black origin for me needs to be pre -1979!!! Sorry! There are the odd exceptions where I will fall in love with a particular song, as with Alicia, and Mary J, and Jazmine Sullivan, and with 'The miseducation of Lauryn Hill' I actually adore the whole album, but usually with contemporary black music I'm bored silly after three tracks, and I suspect I'd be no different with Jill. Though I love her style - she's sassy and real and

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 14:26
  • and?? - and?? You just keep me hanging on, TiggyR!

I agree, I usually don't go for modern soul music (love that Lauryn album as well ). While the music on these clips doesn't knock me over, I am exceedingly jealous of their talent .

On that note, what's the deal with Beyonce? Fabulous voice, darling, faaa-bu-lous! But her music sucks. Why does she not have a producer who knows how to produce inventive music for that astonishing voice. case in point

Mumcentreplus · 23/04/2009 14:56

see I knew jealous was the correct term personally I prefer to covet

spokette · 23/04/2009 15:24

MMH, I agree about Beyonce. Her first album with the exception of three songs, was absolutely atrocious. Her second album was the epitome of blandness. Her third album is the best one to date but still suffers from too much dross. For me Halo, If I was a Boy and Single Ladies (put a ring on it) are superb.

Lauryn Hill's album is empowering as well as uplifting.

I also love John Legend's "Get Lifted" album - real music for those who know good music.

Also agree that most modern soul is dull, dull, dull. Once you have experienced gems like Marvin Gaye's "What's going on?" and though not strictly soul, Stevie, Wonder's marvels like "Innervisions" and "Talking book", one realises that soul music these days is actually soulless and has been stifled by commercialised pop RnB garbage.

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 15:29

Gasp! I've been found out!! Damn you, mcp!

Spokeett, What's Going On? is one of my favourite albums of ALL time. It's so damn good it almost makes me cry. And as for Stevie - are there even any words?? Oh, yes - well, in facial form: .

Am I the only one who bristles at the term 'RnB' when used for tht modern vocal acrobatic crap? It's not rhythmic and there's nothing bluesy!

Not with you on If I Were and Single Ladies (haven't heard Halo but I'm not optimistic), but I still love you anyway!

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 15:30

I will find John Legend right now on Spotify - never heard his stuff before.

Mumcentreplus · 23/04/2009 16:29

RnB very irritating concept..but surely Urban is worse?..I mean wfh is Urban?

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 16:32

God only knows, mcp. (hey, I damned you a while ago; shouldn't you be weeping and gnashing your teeth somewhere dark? )

OP posts:
Mumcentreplus · 23/04/2009 16:38

Bluddy Cheek! does she not know I'm wearing my undamnable pants today

spokette · 23/04/2009 18:48

Urban means some wannabe rnb poptrash singer from Devon.

Hence why Joss Stone won the Urban award for best artist at the Brits a few years. The Brits award is tragic anyway.

Not surprisingly, I don't listen to much mainstream modern stuff because it is mainly dreadful.

spokette · 23/04/2009 18:53

RnB has lost its true meaning amongst most of the purveyors of this type of music.

At the moment I am listening to Dinah Washington. "What a difference a day makes" is a nice way of finishing a working day.

Rindercella · 23/04/2009 18:59

I read the OP & thought WTF??? Jill Scott is beautiful & a hugely talented singer. Then I saw the OP was MrsT & I thought -- WTF, you cannot be serious?? Then I read some more and peace was restored to my world.

puffling · 23/04/2009 19:56

I adore Jill Scott. I thought I was the only one. Grace Makutsi is also American.
Andrea Oliver was in one episode of 'Number one ..' Not so keen on her. Accent kept slipping into English.

Mumcentreplus · 23/04/2009 20:10

Rinder she's just Jealous

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 20:26

Dinah!!!

I don't think I've ever inspired so many WTFs in one thread before, Rinder!!

OP posts:
RnR · 23/04/2009 20:27

I love her acting, not so keen on the music tho'. Lovely voice.

MrsMerryHenry · 23/04/2009 20:29

Even when she's pulling a face showing that she's horrified by something, she still manages to look gorgeous.

This is MY face doing 'horror'.

John Legend's 'Ordinary People' was playing in the operating theatre when my DS was born.

It could have been Daniel Bedingfield's 'If You're Not The One'. I was sweating and mouthing to DH 'Turn it off!'. Luckily, his song ended and John Legend's came on. Thank God. It would have been a bad, bad omen to have the demented little troll-ish one's music welcoming my PFB into the world!

Agree with you on R&B spokette. It's all 18 yr olds shaking their (airbrushed) arses these days .

Jill Scott is on another level, though. Also love Angie Stone, well done whoever said her name. This is one of my all time favourite songs.

Rindercella · 23/04/2009 20:43

Lol Mattie. Barry White's 'Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe' started playing on the radio just as DD was being born. My, how DH & the midwife laughed at that!!

MrsT, I really thought it was a serious question, asked by some idjit. Then I saw your name...and thought, no!!!

My DH knew Bedingfield as a baby!

PMSL at Rinder and Mattie!

I rather like John Legend so thanks Spokette, for that suggestion. I'm also now rediscovering Dinah, which has reminded me of when I was 19 and sang with my uni jazz big band - all very intimidatingly accomplished musicians.

There was little old me in my Monsoon dress, having learned a song called Easy Living straight from the Dinah CD (picked it up only cause it had the song on it - I'd never heard of Dinah before then). Anyway I learned it exactly as she (amazing diva) sang it, thinking that must be the way the song was written? Of course it must be. So after I sang it with the big band, one of the accomplished musos leaned over to me, nodding in that sage 'jahhzzz' way, and says "Nice interpretation!". I was rather bemused, and it took me a a fair while to realise I'd taken credit for plagiarising from The Great Dinah .
