to think £99 charge from Virgin Media is ridiculous!!!

I wanted to move my TV from one side of my living room to the other, and the cable attached to my cable box (Virgin Media) is too short. I called Virgin up and was told it would cost £99 for someone to come out and put a longer wire in. Now is it just me, or is that rather excessive for a two minute job? I mean, surely the cost of a longer bit of cable (its only short by about 8 inches) and the Tech to come and do it doesnt account for £99. I'm not having it one, its a ridiculous price!

We had this done in our last property, and were not charged a penny, so I can't see why they are charging for it now!

Go and buy a coalax cable. Thats all it is! a work of moments then.

They are b***ds. Bbtw. Totally agree.

Well, someone has to be paid to do the job don't they? , in reality the following has to happen

The office that took your phone call needs to be manned and heated and the staff paid.

the person coming out to your house has to be paid.

Although the job is only 2 minutes, it's not actually 2 minutes of one persons time is it? They have to travel there and at least 2 people have to be paid

So on this occasion, I conclude YABU

What salome64 said. I bought a cable for my sky+ box for about a tenner.

RustyBear · 18/04/2009 15:02

Try one of these?

5inthebed · 18/04/2009 15:04

Yes, point taken, but they don't charge for other things. I wouldn't mind paying a small amount, say cost of materials, but £99!

Salome, I shall look into buying that cable. tyvm

yeah nametaken, but the people in the office will be taking possibly hundreds of calls per hour - so you have to divide office expenses between all the jobs they arrange, not just this one. Likewise engineer will do more than one job per hour...there is no way that this job adds up to more than a fiver, let alone £99. YANBU.

ChippyMinton · 18/04/2009 15:05

Rustybear, that's exactly what I bought. I couldn't remember the shop's name.

5inthebed · 18/04/2009 15:06

Thanks Rustybear, I will pop out later and buy one. £9.99 is better than £99.

£99 is steep though, I'll admit that.

salome64 · 18/04/2009 15:09

You are very welcome. I worked in telecoms for quite a while and know exactly how much profit they make out of us. It would make your eyes pop! You could have a team of chippendales come round and change your cable and not even dent their profit margin.

Anyway, customer support is factored into their business model. Charging you for this stuff is just another way of making even more money out of you!

Virgin is notorious for its poor customer service.

5inthebed · 18/04/2009 15:15

Now I would pay £99 for that!

Virgin are crap, had loas of problems with them, no idea why I stay with them tbh.
