We live in a maisonette which shares a communal garden with about 5 other households, mainly elderly folks. We are an "Ecover" household, we don't use "mainstream" cleaning products or air-fresheners.

I am sitting in the garden whilst the DD's play on thier bikes etc, and two of my neighbours have hung washing out, and the stench of Lenor/Comfort/whatever is all but making me gag, I am seriously thinking of going inside the smell is so strong. Bleurgh!!!!!

We have a septic tank, so no choice about whether to use conventional or eco options- if we use phosphate based products, or anything with bleach, our septic tank packs in. And an effluent overflow is not something any of us wants, believe me...

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 18/04/2009 14:57

ecover is mainstream - they sell it in tesco.

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 18/04/2009 14:57

Well I use Comfort's passion flower and ylang ylang and I've had several people asking what I use cos I smell so luvly. And I use Febreze air freshener too.

LaQuitar · 18/04/2009 15:08

Well i have to say that i have a sensitivity to artificial smells. I get headaches with strong perfumes and room sprays indoors.

But how can the smell bother you so much in an open space?

I love the phrase 'is not fair on me'. Thats what my 3 years DS says all day. 'Oh, is not fair i cant have chocolate'. But this phrase seems to also be favourite for some -grown ups- mnetters

Good grief! What a can of worms!!!

Yes, MamaHobgoblin, I find Ecover to be very effective, and pleasant smelling, I use it for clothes and nappies. It's particularly effective during the full moon or if you chant cleansing incantations whilst loading the washing machine

LaQuitar, that was what bothered me. The fact that the smell was so strong even though we were outside!!

I love the blue lenor smell, but the tescos one is very similar and much cheaper. I'm afraid I can't sypamthise as I love the smell of softner. Sad to say i sometimes give my washing a sniff when it is on the line, it reminds me of sunny spring days !! sad I know.
I'd sure you would rather smell clean washing that ciggy smoke !

WittyKitty · 18/04/2009 15:32

I think the only answer is to move house.

WittyKitty · 18/04/2009 15:32

Perhaps an eco-friendly house.

An igloo would be good.

Bucharest · 18/04/2009 15:32

I sniff myself when I've got my blue lenored clothes on. And I've just been feckling under the sink for a spray bottle to make my own febrezey stuff with it, as per pps....

wickedwitchofwestfield · 18/04/2009 15:33

YABU

go inside and do your chanting if it bothers you that much LOL

my old boss was insistent on using that ecover crap, I found to be utterly useless to cope with the demands that a toddlers washing would bring

FWIW I lurve the fabric conditioner aisle! my BF tires of me spending ages sniffing them when we do our weekly shop
last christmas, sainsburys did a special 'christmas spice' one that was blardy lovely and my whole flat used to reek of a lovely warm spicy smell when I hung my washing to dry on the radiators, om nom nom

WittyKitty · 18/04/2009 15:35

GreenMonkies have you ever thought you neighbours may smell you but are too polite to express their disgust?

It's another possibility. I mean do eco-friendly people use deoderant? [thick emoticon]

SerendipitousHarlot · 18/04/2009 15:36

WittyKitty, only if they run round the Old Oak Tree widdershins, whilst spraying

Sassybeast · 18/04/2009 15:36

Can you be an Ecover household if you are also a Maccyds household ? Are the 2 mutually exclusive ?

And what is BLW babypoo please and why is it different to normal poo ?

IneedAbetterNickname · 18/04/2009 15:42

BLW is Baby Led Weaning isn't it??? Not sure what difference that makes to poo though?

wastingmyeducation · 18/04/2009 15:42

Some food comes out the same way it went in. Whole peas for instance.
But mostly it is particularly smug.

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 15:43

yanbu
throw mud at the washing

WittyKitty · 18/04/2009 15:44

Those poor eldery folks.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 18/04/2009 15:48

currently using Waitrose own brand washing powder - £1 for 20 washes (I bought 12 boxes as it was so cheap)

The little Ocado man must have thought we were barking

saint2shoes · 18/04/2009 15:50

I buy asda's own non smelly sensitive one, I like dd to smell of dd. I do think they should market one to hide the aroma of teens though

Gentle · 18/04/2009 15:50

I wonder if any of your neighbours use Biowash balls and are thinking that YOU are the "mainstream" neighbour with the unnecessary chemicals wafting off her laundry line?

expatinscotland · 18/04/2009 15:51

Get inside then.

And get a life, too, whilst you're at it.
