We live in a maisonette which shares a communal garden with about 5 other households, mainly elderly folks. We are an "Ecover" household, we don't use "mainstream" cleaning products or air-fresheners.

I am sitting in the garden whilst the DD's play on thier bikes etc, and two of my neighbours have hung washing out, and the stench of Lenor/Comfort/whatever is all but making me gag, I am seriously thinking of going inside the smell is so strong. Bleurgh!!!!!

YANBU to dislike the smell, each to their own etc. However to do come across as rather smug and sanctimonious in your posting!

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 18/04/2009 13:49

What is ironing water? I honestly don't know! I'm guessing it's scented liquid to put in iron instead of water? If it is, it sounds nice.

Put a peg on your nose then, just make sure it's a handcrafted by South American indians, from an organically raised tree grown in a sustainable forest, peg

HairyMuff · 18/04/2009 13:51

YANBU - those pesky elderly folks and their clean washing eh? Nip it in the bud now or before you know it they'll be emptying their comodes outside too.

LotsOfLovelyShoes · 18/04/2009 13:51

not an untypical roasting for MN I'm afraid.

I am far from an ecover house but I do find the smell of other peoples laundry quite strong some times......

are you on the laptop in the garden??

SerendipitousHarlot · 18/04/2009 13:51

Thunderduck

You would hate my house as well, OP - I make my own febreze-y sort of stuff with blue lenor and water in a garden spray bottle and spray it at will...

And I use Oust. Everywhere.

HellHathNoFury · 18/04/2009 13:51

How hysterical

DH is currently using Mr Sheen, I have just finished using a pampers baby wipe, and I wash my clothes not only in mainstream stuff but I BUY IT IN BULK!

I am a representative of the devil

And I think it smells LARVELY

Go inside and avoid all those awful poisonous toxin smells.

YABU

Habbibu · 18/04/2009 13:52

I use Ecover, but I wish it did have more of a smell, tbh! You may be more sensitive to it, but I think YABU in this case.

KingRolo · 18/04/2009 13:52

Round here it's the smell of exhaust fumes, BBQs and manure that forces us inside so think yourself lucky.

I hate stinky stuff too, makes me itch.
I use Surcare b/c it has no perfume.

"We are a Surcare household" doesn't have quite the same ring to it tho...

muggglewump · 18/04/2009 13:53

I use Vaporesse and probably way too much fabric conditioner. I love the smells.

You'd hate to live next door to me

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 18/04/2009 13:55

Mind you, I'll use anything to mask the smells of dog, husband and no-longer-constipated DD1 in this house. I may iron the dog with ironing water.

Bucharest · 18/04/2009 13:55

Serendipitous...what a lovely idea! I'm going to do the same....

MuffinBaker · 18/04/2009 13:55

You don't have to miss going out in the garden. You are choosing to let it bother you.

Tinker · 18/04/2009 13:56

Where is the OP?

GreenMonkies · 18/04/2009 13:58

HopeForTheBest, glad I'm not the only one who thinks these things stink.

And really, the rest of you are taking a slightly Tongue in cheek thread waaaaaaaaay to seriously, and obviously don't realize how strong (and potentially harmful) these perfumes are. It's one thing to be able to smell fabric softener etc when you are indoors and a foot away from your clothes, but for the smell to be pervading a garden is excessive surely?

And yes WittyKitty, we are lucky to have such nice weather, which is why I want to be outside in it..............

sigh

MrsMattie · 18/04/2009 13:59

I have very sensitive smell, but don't you think you are slightly overreacting? A whiff of Lenor in the fresh air? It's hardly chain smoking in your front room, is it?

Ecover stinks to the high heavens, btw. We bought the washing detergent once and our clothes smelled like windscreen wiper fluid. Yuck.

wastingmyeducation · 18/04/2009 14:00

Oh, fabric conditioner makes me feel nauseous. Anything with artificial perfume smells sort of greasy, so far from fresh.

MrsMellowdrummer · 18/04/2009 14:03

We use Ecover too, and I can't bear the smell of clothes that have been washed in artificial fragrance. I find it very pervasive - if you put something "smelly" (that's been washed by somebody else) in a wardrobe or drawers, every thing else ends up reeking of it too for weeks.

My dh doesn't notice it or care though, and thinks I'm a bit bonkers on the subject.

It's hardly your neighbours doing anything wrong though is it - you just have to grin and bear it!

traceybath · 18/04/2009 14:04

Oh dear i love love love blue lenor - it smells of home, comfort etc - just like in the adverts

Have persevered with ecover and just got fed up of it not getting things clean enough.

Perhaps your neighbours are offended by your dingy whites and are busy posting 'why does our neighbour not use proper chemicals to do her washing?'

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 18/04/2009 14:05

I used to buy the very expensive 'jojojojojoba and olive and almond and whatever else we can think of oil' fabric conditioners and those preposterous 'Infusions' at astronomical prices. Manufacturers LOVE me and my delight in all smells fake..........However I have started buying all the 'Pure' stuff due to baby in belly. Pah!
