Why do people not use them?! I mean indicators on cars in case you don't know what I'm talking about lol.

Today I was coming home and the car in front decided to break suddenly then move over into the next lane...if they had their indicators on I could assume they were going to slow down.

Then at the top of the slip road they still didn't indicate.

Would I have been unreasonable to start pipping my horn at them (I didn't)

DH and i always joke that they are an additional extra on some cars and that the owner opted out of having them installed.
I dont like non-indicators, im not a mind reader!

SarahL2 · 16/04/2009 16:00

Does anyone know why it is that some people insist on indicating right when they are turning (left) to come off a roundabout?

It seems to be lots of people who do it so I'm assuming there is a reason rather than some people just being stupid.

I live in Milton Keynes so I see a lot of people on roundabouts and this really annoys me..

I'd rather they just didn't bother!

coolma · 16/04/2009 16:11

Well it's ok for taxi drivers and people with huge great 4 x 4's not to use them, so obviously if the car fell into one of those categories you are being completely u. If it was a normal car then yes, of course they should use indicators. The 4 x 4 people are also allowed to park on a) double yellows, and b) ridiculously unsafe parts of the road outside schools

KayHarker · 16/04/2009 16:19

lol, I read the title thinking "pretty accessory? Does she mean a fascinator?" and before the thread loaded I was trying to work out what else you could use a fascinator for...

SparklyGothKat · 16/04/2009 16:22

we say that new cars don't come with them

orangehead · 16/04/2009 16:28

I love people who indicate right when turning left, or indicate left when turning right. Its so helpful

Ripeberry · 16/04/2009 16:29

People who don't indicate that they are turning left at roundabouts are timewasters.

cyteen · 16/04/2009 16:34

Indicator abuse makes me seethe although not as much as the frightening amount of young men I see blazing through red lights and yakking on their bloody mobiles while driving like pricks. I've never seen so many red lights flouted before I moved to this area - seriously, at least one a week.

Perhaps I've lived a sheltered life...

fizzpops · 16/04/2009 16:52

I admit to shaking my head in great sadness at indicator offenders . Once a lovely man made a very guilty face and mouthed, 'Sorry!'. Some of them are OK.

Stayingsunnygirl · 16/04/2009 17:02

I think that some of you are being pretty unreasonable. If you want to know what other drivers are intending to do, then you should invest in a crystal ball. Indicators, shmindicators!!

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 16/04/2009 17:13

Thanks, Juneybean. I am so glad that it's not just me who comes over all Ranty Macrant about this. Lazy bastards, that's what non-indicators are! It's too much effort to move their blooming fingers.

steviesgirl · 16/04/2009 17:15

YANBU. This really annoys me. I really hate it when people don't indicate when going left at roundabouts. You're sitting there thinking they are coming your way like a fool and they decide to turn bloody left. Arrrghh!

LouIsAHappyLittleVegemite · 16/04/2009 17:24

I spend my life trying not to get runover by people who have no indicators (usually audi drivers). I mena how hard is it to flick a lever??

but I just thought they were there for xmas, like the flashing fairy lights on xmas trees......

Lizzzombie · 16/04/2009 17:36

oooh, this is my favourite topic of conversation at the moment.
Most of the drivers in my town seem to not use them at all, and I frequently want to bash on their bonnets when crossing the road at a junction.
Twunts, I believe the correct term for them is. (the drivers, not the indicators!)

southeastastra · 16/04/2009 17:38

how are you meant to show them you're annoyed they haven't indicated?

MrsMagooo · 16/04/2009 17:40

I'm a learner at the moment (although my test is fast approaching) & the amount of people who fail to indicate/do something random/ride my bumper the ENTIRE time I'm on my lesson is unbelievable!

lljkk · 16/04/2009 17:42

There was an article in local paper about how indicators could be "dangerous" if used unneccesarily, because they might confuse people or using it would be completely pointless. This was written by a driving instructor no less. He was particularly adament that you should not use them if you couldn't be sure if anyone would see them I was taught you always use them even if you couldn't see anyone else on the road-- exactly for the people you aren't aware of!

kiddiz · 16/04/2009 17:42

Many years ago I followed a car from one side of a town to the other and he never indicated once. A couple of times this was not just annoying it was downright dangerous. I don't know what came over me as I'm usually pretty non-confrontational but eventually when he pulled into a petrol station (without indicating!!)I followed him in. I went up to him and said "excuse me I don't think your indicators are working". He very sharply replied "Yes they are, my car is brand new". I said "well why don't you b***y well use them then" turned round, got in my car and drove off before he had chance to reply!!!
People who think that hazard lights give them the right to stop and park anywhere are another pet hate of mine too !!!!!

minesacheeseandpicklesandwich · 16/04/2009 17:56

Kiddiz that is soooo excellent, I wish I had the nerve to do that sometimes!

What I find equally annoying though is the unnecessary indicator. You know, the one who indicates to come off the slip road onto the motorway - I mean, where else is he going to go????? I also don't indicate when I'm in a lane that only has one direction. I do tap my fingers on the wheel if I have to sit at traffic lights behind someone indicating when there is ONLY ONE WAY TO GO!!!!

juneybean · 16/04/2009 17:59

I must admit to hitting my hazard lights and stopping once but I was having a panic attack so I am very sorry to the car who was behind me at the time lol....

CrackopentheBaileys · 16/04/2009 18:01

This exact thing happened to me today! I was following a car that turned off the main road, then 1st right, and then unbelieveably pulled over to let out a passenger, all without indicating, and with me behind!
I generally tut tut and shake my head a little, unless it has really put me in danger, and then I'd give a toot!

ShowOfHands · 16/04/2009 18:05

DH followed a guy yesterday who didn't indicate at several junctions/roundabouts. DH then noticed the guy was yakking on his phone.

It's a shame for the yakker that dh was in an unmarked police car and pulled the guy over, fined him and whacked some points on his licence. Usually wouldn't feel gleeful about the misfortune of others but...

I'm trying to learn atm and am terrified all the time because nobody seems to be concerned about letting others know that they're about to turn left.
