to want people to post in the right topic, rather than shoving everything into AIBU to get a wider audience?

I think from now my default answer will be YABU when I consider that the post would have been more appropriate in a different topic.

Portoeufino · 14/04/2009 19:01

YABU. That would spoil all the fun!

MIAonline · 14/04/2009 19:08

Well this should have been in chat, or possibly relationships as it is to do with your relationship with other MN, or other subjects or....

YABU, live and let live

pamelat · 14/04/2009 19:09

YABU, sorry. Its what makes this topic area entertaining, in the lightest sense of the word.

DuffyFluckling · 14/04/2009 19:12

Yes, I wondered if anyone would point that out MIA.

Come on though.

AIBU to buy this dress? YABU! Post in Style & Beauty.

AIBU to not know how to make pastry? YABU! Post in Food or Recipes.

I made them up, but you see that sort of thing every day.

Just me then?

I agree... a lot of the posts in AIBU are people just venting and not actually facing a dilema and needing opinions at all.

Rhubarb · 14/04/2009 19:15

Well tbh the board can move pretty quickly and some people may not give a fig for a topic that's posted in Style, but may have their attention caught by the thread in AIBU and then you may get a response just because...

I've been guilty of posting stuff in Chat rather than Health because I know there is more chance of it being answered in Chat. I may also do a slightly misleading thread title, just to get peoples attention.

There is nothing worse than posting something you really need an opinion on, and seeing it fall off the page.

Hassled · 14/04/2009 19:15

YANBU and when I see examples the anal filer in me wants to point out that actually, I think you'll find if you click on Topics there's just the sub-category you're looking for. Everything in its place, please.

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:17

AIBU doesn't just get you a wider audience, it also gets you SHOUTED at.

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:18

Hassled - feel free to point out where a thread should be instead of AIBU - it just adds to the general ambience.

Rhubarb · 14/04/2009 19:18

Now to illustrate my point, someone posted a topic in Childrens Health, but they've had to bump it twice to get a reply.

Unfortunately Mumsnet has become so popular that people tend to bypass the "mundane" stuff and head straight for Chat or AIBU.

Which is kinda missing the point of Mumsnet.

valleysprincess · 14/04/2009 19:19

I don't really give a toss who posts what where.

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:20

I tend to go to active convos rather than to any particular topic.

And of course I sometimes follow posters around if I know they are good at finding interesting threads

Doodle2U · 14/04/2009 19:21

Do you think, just maybe, you're taking this tinterwebby malarky a tad too seriously?

DuffyFluckling · 14/04/2009 19:23

Yes, it does miss the point.

We need the fun stuff because that's what keeps everyone here, but the point should be that the fun and silly threads keep everyone around so that they are on hand to answer the advice threads.

If everyone posts everything in AIBU and chat the forum stops working as effectively.

Hassled - absolutely. It makes my teeth itch. It's so untidy.

OP posts:
DuffyFluckling · 14/04/2009 19:24

Not really Doodle. It's not keeping me awake at night or anything.

MIAonline · 14/04/2009 19:25

What you do find, is that some of the other boards are handled as if they are an AIBU, so to take one of your examples Duffyfluckling, someone may post something simple like I can't make pastry and then its all YABU, FFS its easy, FGS, whats the world come to etc etc. (You get my drift!)

Now that is BU

valleysprincess · 14/04/2009 19:25

internetz is serious business

BoysAreLikeDogs · 14/04/2009 19:28

Is coz they is fick innit

DuffyFluckling · 14/04/2009 19:29

But that's so MN Mia!

OP: How do I do X?
Answer: Ooooh, you don't wanna do X. Do Y.
Answer: How extrordinary that you can't do X.
Amswer: I'm SHOCKED that anyone would advocate doing Y. Z is the only reasonable option.
etc etc etc

Love it.

at DuffyFLuckling (grr at the difficulty of typing your name correctly)

Numberfour · 14/04/2009 19:32

YABU. you should be posting on netmums, OP.

MintyyAeroEgg · 14/04/2009 19:32

YANBU.

I think exactly the same as what Hassled said. And you of course, Duffy.

MIAonline · 14/04/2009 19:58

In the style of a stalker Duffy I cannot help but notice that on a thread in 'relationships' this evening you have pointed out that to a poster who said the OP was BU, that it is not an AIBU thread! I rest my case and I am glad you agree with me

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:59

People often are benig unreasonable, should we not point this out to them unless they have specifically asked?

Hassled · 14/04/2009 20:08

DuffyFluckling (God that's hard to type).

I have to say I usually just look at Active CConvos - when PuzzleRocks or someone reminds me I'll have a stint at Unanswered, or sometimes seek out the SEN/SN topic. I'm no more likely to respond to an AIBU or Chat thread than anything else.

But I do like neat categorisation .
