To think it's no big deal that I wore (clean) shorts into the swimming pool?

I expected it to be an ordinary trip to the pool, but no thanks to some over-zealous lifeguard I was asked kindly to leave. I didn't see the problem and assured the man I would bring "proper" swimwear next time, and got into the pool with my LO. I wasn't even swimming, so what's the big deal?

I can't see why you can't wear shorts in the pool when men can. Were they men type trunks or daisy duke type efforts.

not trunks, just very short shorts, the type I wouldn't seen dead in if not at the pool or at home in the garden

Of course I had something else on that would have been an arrestable offence. It was a decent swim vest!

I can't see any reason why you can't wear shorts on the bottom half. What is the problem, could it be that they thought you'd already been wearing them around the town and they were dirty? Which is totally mad, because loads of people, especially kids, wear their swimsuits underneath their clothes on the way to the pool.

exactly, we all do it! Couldn't see the problem either. Funny thing was, the guy was all mouth and we stayed for about an hour (DP did all the in-and-out of the pool with LO to prevent my rubbing the guy's nose in it) but as we were getting out of the pool he'd arranged for his senior to have a go at me all over again. I reiterated, no one has ever seen those shorts as a problem. Silly arse.

Perhaps for next time, you should invest in one of these victorian bathing suits, and make a point of asking him (and his senior) if this is more acceptable??

ridiculous. I swim at our leisure centre with shorts on because i am self conscious and . rather do that than not go in at all.

what about women who have even greater cultural reasons for covering up? does that mean they are not allowed in at all?

I think you're right number4, maybe I will. He did actually ask me to leave, but there was no way - having paid nearly a tenner to get in and not wanting to let LO down who was really excited, DP doesn't come swimming with us very often. Also have been to same pool in my shorts many times. I do it because I am also self conscious also: I put on so much weight when PG (nearly 4 st) and I have saggy skin around my thighs where I have lost it.

He greeted us on the way in with a big smile then looked me up and down and, well you know the rest. He was quite young, maybe he has an inferiority complex.

I think you should complain officially. Unless they can come up with a hygiene or safety reason, the pool is out of order. People should be able to wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

I believe the reason for the swimming costume rules is to stop people from coming in off the street wearing the shorts they've been gardening in (pesticides), walking in the street (exhaust particles), generally, not clean enough for a pool. I know people were costumes to the pool, but that's the point, they don't wear them all day and they're likely to be cleaner, especially if they save the pee for the pool.

I can see that you could do all of the above in a cossie, but it's less likely.

They're trying to keep the pool clean, but then they should make the rule absolutely clear that it's cossies only.

I dont think you can have a rule its swimsuits/trunks only - I have seen a couple of ladies at the swimming pool before now wearing a kind of all in one - sort of like forensic overalls iyswim - their arms & legs were fully covered; am assuming it was for religious reasons, but whatever the reason the pool attendants didnt seem to have a problem with it.

I would definitely complain.

I am also self conscious and don't go swimming anymore cos i feel uncomfortable so i think you are really good going in your shorts, i hadn't actually thought about doing that!!

Sorry I don't understand, you say you weren't swimming, yet you also said you got in the pool. Did you ask him why the shorts weren't aceptable attire?

I mean I was in the baby pool, therefore I was just supervising LO and splashing about but no actual swimming for me today.

I did tell the pool attendant the shorts were clean, which they were. Very obvious I'd not worn them in street, it was a cold day here. Just common sense.
