Ours is closed for lunch time, but that is when the doctors do the home visits. They also use the time to do minor ops at the surgery. However, they also open until 7.30 pm several nights as well.

I spent one summer working in a doctor's surgery - the reception was open 8:30am until 1pm then was closed for an hour for lunch. Like sayhowitis's GPs there weren't any appointments at the surgery over lunchtime so they didn't have people turning up in person, and you had all the rest of the day to ring and make appointments so it wasn't worth paying for an hour of someone's time to cover the lunch break just so they could answer the phone then.

It's very common for a surgery to close for an hour over lunchtime. Normally the phone message will give the details of an out of hours service that you can call if it is something desperately urgent - but obviously then you would be asked to go to the drop centre or whatever the local arrangements are rather than being seen by your own GP.

My Mum's practice use Wednesday afternoons for staff training so they don't run any surgeries, again you should be able to call the out of hours if it's desperate.
