To make a big song and dance of DS's 1st birthday?

So many people keep asking about it that we're thinking of doing a kid's party in the afternoon (DS has lots of little friends, as most of our friends and family have very young children) with a little children's buffet, ball pool, playing out in the garden as we've just bought our 1st house, etc.

Then we want to put on an adults buffet in the evening, let the adults have a few drinks and what have ya, and celebrate with all them too. Now that isn't exactly DS centred is it? But it just seems to suit everyone.

Really a child of one doesn't really understand birthdays. It is more of a day for you and your friends so why not have a more adult-oriented celebration. There will be plenty of time for children's parties when he is old enough to understand the concept of birthdays.

we just had a piss-up when my pfb had his 1st birthday

but you do what you want, don't be swayed by other people

I agree, we made ds's birthday fun for him (balloons, toys and cake, what more could he ask for!?) but the party was more of a general celebration and thanks to those who had helped us through the pregnancy and first year of his life. True he didn't exactly have enough little friends for a kids' party anyway but hey ho. It was a wonderful day

Do what you want to do though. It's a very exciting day for mums and dads I think.

Its up to you, but whether he understands doesn't matter, whether he enjoys it does.
My dd2 was 1 last week. We just had a few LOs under 2 over for party food and cake. Sang happy birthday which she grinned at because she was centre of attention. She then left early and retired to her cot for her afternoon sleep
Best part of her day was trying to eat all the wrapping paper LOL
