I have noticed these last few months there seems to be an attitute on mumsnet of

"if I can't have it I don't want anyone else to have it either"

OP posts:

I don't think it is just people moaning about rich people having a better PTA or car or whatever. It is also all the moaning about resenting people who have a disabled badge, still living grandparents for their children, more respect, more time, a tall child, twins, 3 kids, 1 kid, better tax credits. It just seems like there is constant checking of who has got what. Some posters will not be satisfied that they have got their fair share out of society unless lots of other people come on and say they are having a terrible time and their legs are blown off in a landmine accident and they living on the streets.

Rant over.

pagwatch · 26/03/2009 14:42

MiilyR
you don't know my sister do you?
That sounds exactly like her. there are people like that

IwantPeace · 26/03/2009 14:44

No one wanted to deprive anyone of EMA on that thread, the point that some made was that all children should have it to make it fair. That is a completly different point to "if I can't have it I don't want anyone else to have it either"

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:01

Okay, after a fairly exhaustive exploration of the subject, and two bottles of Margaux (can thoroughly recommend, though not with lamb, of course), we came up with the following as a baseline necessary for a reasonable lifestyle (please don't read if you are likely to be offended - it is intended for the comfortable).

Assets: property: 3-4 million+, stocks and shares, listed 1-2 million, unlisted ditto. Income: net aggregate pa of 300K+ plus bonuses, financial or equivalent. Expected inheritable wealth 1 million+, adjusted for those that haven't transferred it in time to avoid taxes. At least one offshore account of 1-2 million for a rainy day.

What do you think? It is only in the region of comfortable, of course, we tried to be reasonable and not go for actually rich.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:03

Ah. So you can't be the self-made rich, then? Only those also expecting to inherit.

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:04

Please read it properly. It's that sort of sloppy approach that separates the black sheep from the golden goats.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:07

"Expected inheritable wealth 1 million+, adjusted for those that haven't transferred it in time to avoid taxes. " Go, on, explain. Think of it as your philanthropic duty.

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:07

Sorry, should have been clearer: the inheritable part is but a fragment, a few fiscal crumbs that have tumbled under the table. We only included it to ensure that members had the right kind of background. If, however, they are educated enough I suppose we could forego the inherited part. Shall we say Masters and above?

diedandgonetodevon · 26/03/2009 15:08

Hully, that sounds reasonable

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:13

I am a sloppy writing black sheep, it's true. But fantastically wealthy.

I already have everything and it's all gold-plated. It does make the helicopter a bit cumbrous, but Pablo is a simply marvellous pilot, and so handsome and obliging.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:32

gold-plated? Common as muck, hully. Solid gold or nowt round 'ere. And cumbrous my arse. It's so very nouveau to coin words so casually.

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:39

Pablo drew the line at solid gold, strong and talented though he is. And one has to listen to the staff occasionally, particularly when they are wielding one's joystick.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:40

Hully, if you go round threads making mischief there will be Tears Before Bedtime. Mark my words, lady...

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:43

I may have just gone a bit too far on one thread...but a little mischief does gladden the heart and brighten the day.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:44

We've been here before, hully... . I remember a certain previous incarnation of yours.

Though I did like your vase snobbery on the mantelpiece thread.

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:48

I ought to namechange, it's a (gold-plated) bugger when people remember you and then drag you off threads with their fancy neckwear.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:50

It's for your own good. You're fantastically wealthy but clearly not of the diplomat class .

This old thing? Got this after a mugger tripped over it and ran away. Not my taste, really. Gold-plated scarves are so heavy, and they just don't drape well.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:51

PS. That'll be £8000 for protection services. You can pay up now, or I'll send big Ron round later.

hullygully · 26/03/2009 15:52

Yeah, but I've got Pablo and his giant tool innit.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 15:53

Pay up, lady, or Pablo's tool gets it.
