To think that the Waitrose ad for their Indian Meal Deal is racist?

tonysoprano · 25/03/2009 14:32

It advertises the meal deal and then the line at the end says 'Goodness Gracious me' to communciate 'wow what a great deal'. Not in a faux Indian accent but dodgy- no?

Racist?

Eyeballsinthesky · 25/03/2009 14:38

Oh Lord. Then so is the Walkers add about their foul new crisps with the Chinese girls chanting about Hoisin sauce etc etc. Everything is racist if you look at it like that.

edam · 25/03/2009 14:38

I think it's a reference to the v. successful comedy programme of that name...

Get a SOH...

TheOddOne · 25/03/2009 14:39

Not everything that is to do with race is necessarily racist.

AMumInScotland · 25/03/2009 14:40

Haven't seen it, but that doesn't sound particularly racist to me.

edam · 25/03/2009 14:40

(Unless you think Meera Syal and Sanjeev Baskhar (sp?) are racist? Their 'Going out for an English sketch was wonderful, rude Asian people treating the English waiter like dirt etc. etc. really sending up the behaviour of SOME drunken louds in Indian restaurants.)

nigglewiggle · 25/03/2009 14:40

When there are genuine examples of racism to highlight, this is laughable.

Hulababy · 25/03/2009 14:41

I wouldn't have thought this was racist. I'd assume they were making a ref to the TV programme of that nam, but not on a racist way.

frasersmummy · 25/03/2009 14:41

hahah we dont get waitrose adverts in scotland (prepares to be corrected but I have never seen one)so cant comment on this one in particular

but oh my goodness the world has gone pc mad ...

DSM · 25/03/2009 15:06

I've seen Waitrose adverts (though admittedly, not this one)

Racist.. ROFL.

mayorquimby · 25/03/2009 15:16

THAT'S RACIALIST

ScottishMummy · 25/03/2009 15:26

not racist at all.alluding to the hit tv show.talk about looking for offence were none present

BarStoolCobra · 25/03/2009 15:27

God i love it when someone says "racialist"
its like seeing a Raleigh chopper or visiting a Fine Fare.

ScottishMummy · 25/03/2009 15:35

racialist makes me think mispalced indignation from someone who probably says mentalist

nickschick · 25/03/2009 15:37

Even better when you hear my dear old fil complain about psychedelic yobs .........he means psychotic lmao

doggiesayswoof · 25/03/2009 15:42

Not seen the ad.

This is annoying - when people cry "racist" and there's nothing there. It makes it harder to draw attention to stuff that IS racist.

Gives fuel to the "pc gorn maaaaad" brigade.

edam · 25/03/2009 16:14

@ psychedelic yobs - would they be wearing kaftans and wibbling about unicorns and how they could fly?

georgiemum · 25/03/2009 16:19

Waitrose's Indian food is nasty though. M&S much better!

Is 'racialist' a word? I think not. Neither is 'burgalarize' whilst I am on my soapbox.

LEMAGAIN · 25/03/2009 16:29

Asolutely not racist, or racilist .

Does anyone remember the early 80s ad for the noodles called chicken oriental??? It went along the lines of "mental, mental chicken oriental" They could never air that now!! It always made me laugh as a child (more because of the use of the word mental i think) and i now use the phrase "chicken oriental" to describe my dogs mad moments - "oh look hes gone chicken oriental". Thats not racist i hope.
