To be pissed off that my DH has left me with a blocked loo this morning and cheerily gone off to work?

2nd loo also out of action since BIL tinkered with it to stop a leak and hasn't yet been back to finish what he started just after Christmas.

Mains drain is fine (annoyingly as I'm a dab hand with a set of rods!).

It's the U-bend and I don't have a plunger, neither do my lovely neighbours and DH also has the car to day as his bike is knackered.

Am now having to drag my 70YO Mum across town (actually she's a v. young 70 and happy to be dragged anywhere if DD is at the end of it ), via in-laws to pick up unblocking chemicals and plunger which may or may not do the trick.

I wouldn't mind so much but it was supposed to be the first whole day I've had at home with DD to do fun stuff for 3 weeks, so am mightily cheesed off at the mo.

wouold you rather dh took the day off work to fix the loo?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 09:21

Do you expect him to take the day off to unblock the loo?

yabu, call a plumber.

TrillianAstra · 25/03/2009 09:21

I doubt your DH's work would accept 'blocked loo' as a reason to have a day off.

YANBU to be pissed off, but be pissed off that the loo is blocked, not that DH has gone to work.

Unblocking chemicals are usually pretty good, hope they work for you.

belgo · 25/03/2009 09:22

call a plumber and get BOTH toilets fixed.

bamboobutton · 25/03/2009 09:22

when this happens to me i get washing up gloves on and use the bog brush as a substitute plunger.

GentleOtter · 25/03/2009 09:23

It is worth a try to stand on a chair in front of your loo (or a stepladder) and pour a watering can filled with boiling water down it.

Madmentalbint · 25/03/2009 09:24

YANBU

I'd be pissed off too if a blocked loo spoilt my day off. I don't blame your OH for going to work though and someone will have to pay the plumbers bill. Ouch!

Hope you get it sorted.

Jstbcsiamammsntr · 25/03/2009 09:25

buckets of hot water with disinfectant pured down, or use hose/shower attachment.

DontlookatmeImshy · 25/03/2009 09:26

Wire coat hangers can work pretty well for this if it's just the u bend.

womblingfree · 25/03/2009 09:37

Thanks - Dontlookatme - didn't think of that if plunger failed.

No obviously I don't expect him to take the day off, and I try not to be the kind of woman who expects a bloke to do everything for her - I do all the DIY etc.

What pissed me off was his casual attitude - 'Bye, and by the way the loo's blocked' and out the door.

I got made redundant last summer and DH is not fantastically well paid, so can't justify getting a plumber in without at least trying to fix it myself first, and can't do that cos DH has the car (sold our 2nd one recently cos his mum bought him a lovely bike for his birthday so he could cycle to work, and unfortunately it has had to go back to the shop every couple of weeks with something going wrong with it).

And have no 2nd loo as DH won't ask his bro about when he's going to sort it out. I can totally understand that too as he lives at the other end of the country, but thought he had told DH what to do and was sending us the part (he works in the building trade).

Mostly I'm just pissed off that it has buggered up my day with DD, and won't get another chance for a girly day as DH breaks up early for Easter hols for 3.5 weeks on Friday.

So I guess I needed to rant a bit...

Go out for the day - use the loo in cafes etc, buy a plunger, some large marigolds and some chemicals while you're out, arrive home when DH does and say 'I'll just get dinner started, I've got everything you need, here you go'. With a cheery smile of course

womblingfree · 25/03/2009 09:44

Trillian - that did cross my mind actually, but is just not worth the expense and hassle, although if the Mr Muscle and plunger don't work we may well be going back to my parents for the day!
