to think that the 'researcher' just wanted to look at lap dancers?

'Great Sperm Race' last night. Appallingly poorly made programme in which we were supposed to imagine sperm as people, and feel sorry for them when they didn't make it to the fallopian tube.

So this guy in New Mexico has done 'research' that proves that women are more attractive to men when they are ovulating. He has proved it by asking lap dancers how many tips they made, and linking the higher tips with their ovulation cycle.

Was I the only person coughing 'bullshit' at this? The only reason the producers included this dubious 'research' was so they could run footage of lap dancers (just in case we didn't know what they were, of course) and I suspect that Mr PhD had a similar motive.

Ha ha me & DH watched it and said exactly the same thing!!!

DSM · 24/03/2009 15:02

Hmm, personally I thought it was quite interesting. The lap dancing theory and study I thought was a good idea, and I thought the outcome proved that the 'research' was relevant.

I was aware that it was widely accepted that women are more attractive to men when ovulating, mainly to do with pheromone release I believe, which is increased as you ovulate. I think this was as good a way as any to test the theory.

What would you have done, had you been asked to research this claim?

I do not dispute that they researchers were happy do do it! I should imagine there were quite a few volunteers

solidgoldbrass · 24/03/2009 15:07

By the sound of it, the research could just have easily been done by asking any group of single and sexually active (or looking for dates) women the same question ie did they get chatted up more often when ovulating?
They could surely have included some footage of fully-clothed women in bars or clubs to pad the programme out...

MorrisZapp · 24/03/2009 15:08

DSM, I just don't believe it.

How in the name of arse does ovulation result in higher tips for lap dancers? I just can't see it. Wouldn't the ladies notice the higher tips each month and adjust their dancing at other times to correspond, thus earning more money?

I don't believe in the power of 'pheromones'. I think they were invented in the 1980's to flog bad aftershave.

OP posts:
DSM · 24/03/2009 15:14

Oh, I believe it.
The dancers will get higher tips because more people will be attracted to them, and they will be called in for more 'private dances'. And I do believe it.

Solidgold - the point is these women are there every night, and the men go there for them. Asking women about being chatted up leaves too many variables..
Maybe there were less single men some nights?
Maybe some didn't look approachable?
Maybe outfit choices made a difference?

Using lap dancers removes quite a lot of these variables, and makes the 'research' a bit fairer, don't you think?

DSM · 24/03/2009 15:14

And I think they will just be happy for the week or so of higher earnings, I don't think they would stop working for a week in the lower earning week!

MorrisZapp · 24/03/2009 15:16

I'm 37 and I've never had a horny or lucky time of the month. And trust me, I've done years of research.

OP posts:
DSM · 24/03/2009 15:32

Surely you at least feel more horny prior to your period? I definitely do. Its actually how I know its coming, I get positively insatiable

MorrisZapp · 24/03/2009 15:34

I wish!

I'm a sack of tatties all month round these days. Never noticed a horny period in my purple youth either.

I've never been the type to 'listen to my body' though. I just buy the tampons and think no more of it.

OP posts:
DSM · 24/03/2009 15:38

Oh, I thought it was common to get this way.. Maybe its just me

I'm not the type to 'listen to my body' either. But when I am getting crazy horny for a few days, I know I am about to have my period.

Maybe it is natures way of trying to get me pregnant again.. the bitch. I have had enough!

Mumcentreplus · 24/03/2009 15:45

hahaha...I was laughing at the lap dancers too...the same can be be said about variables with them maybe their are less men ogling some nights, maybe it's further from payday, maybe some men didn't like the look of their clear heeled shoes ..not as drunk and horny some nights?...the list goes on...I'm always horny ..but before my period I can get more frisky

MorrisZapp · 24/03/2009 15:48

I agree, it's hard to put your finger on so to speak.

I mean, when did a guy not fancy a lap dancer becuase she wasn't giving off the same pheromones as her colleague?

It's all visual innit.

OP posts:
DSM · 24/03/2009 15:49

True, true.

But those variables would apply to both sexes in the case of asking women about being chatted up.

At least in this case, the majority of the variables are removed on the female side. And one can presume that the majority of the men there have money with them, and that they are fairly 'drunk and horny' to be there in the first place.

Obviously, this is only for the most part, not for all.

I am not disputing that it wasn't the most scientific of studies, but I can see some merit in it.

DSM · 24/03/2009 15:50

Well Morris, maybe not. That was the point of the experiment.

And they did seem to prove that it may not just be a visual thing.

Obviously, in some cases, it will be. Some men prefer blondes for example. So even if a brunette is pheremoning all over them, they'll probably still go for the blonde.

MrsTittleMouse · 24/03/2009 15:54

Someone else has also done this research by photographing women over their cycle and asking men to rate how attractive they are. Hm, sounds like some kind of bike porn the way that I've written it but you get what I mean.
But you don't get to show footage of lapdancers that way.

solidgoldbrass · 24/03/2009 17:06

DSM: but actually, a lot of lap dancers work varying shifts and move from club to club - and their tip ratio may also depend on how willing they are to offer illicit extras to the punters. And a lot of non-lapdancers do hang out at the same club or bar night after night.

Joy27 · 24/03/2009 18:04

Deviating slightly back to the OP but YES! It was a RIDICULOUS programme! You can just imagine the brainstorm in the production office:

"OK... women are obsessed with babies... I'm thinking a new take on fertility... I'm thinking worried career women with dried-up ovaries.....I'm thinking putting the SEX back into fertility... how can we get lap dancers into a science programme?... how can we get inside the mind of a sperm?... How can we make our viewers feel like they ARE sperm? I'm thinking people in sperm costumes, fighting... climbing up ladders..."

Basically what they ended up with was a school science programme interspersed with Alan Partridge out-takes on acid.

And the footage of the sperm wriggling up a load of bling alleys in the cervical wall as the ominous voiceover boomed "the vast majority of them are destined to DIE" was just depressing.

Joy27 · 24/03/2009 18:05

Oops. Meant to say blind alleys, not bling alleys. Though really, I wouldn't have been surprised if bling alleys had somehow made their way into this programme!

HolyGuacamole · 24/03/2009 19:19

Maybe the higher tips coincided with the guys paydays? Or maybe men are randier or more easily parted from their cash at certain times of the month? Who knows.

I didn't agree with a lot of it, I mean I dress the same all month long - I don't wear scanty clothes at a certain time of the month etc, in fact I don't wear scanty clothes at all. I might dress up for nights out or friends visiting but not because I'm ovulating.

Also, some of the descriptions were just plain weird "the dark hell that is the vagina". WTF? My DH doesn't think it's a dark hell that's for sure

AnyFucker · 24/03/2009 19:23

I do feel hornier mid-cycle, no doubt about it

DH loves it

HolyGuacamole · 24/03/2009 19:30

ROFL AF your mind is in the gutter

Oh yes, I'd agree with the feeling randier during ovulation but I don't think it affects the way I dress....well not in public anyways! Scanty in the boudoir is different though

AnyFucker · 24/03/2009 19:49

I think I might have a certain "strut" around that time too...

must ask DH
