to expect people to stay in the left hand lane unless they're overtaking?

Had several long drives this last week and am getting increasing irritated by the numpties who insist on getting into the middle lane as soon as they get on the motorway (or even worse the outside lane) and resolutely stay there even though it would take them a month of sundays to reach the nearest car in the inside lane let alone overtake it.

Having to go right out to the outside lane and back to the left hand lane time and time again to get past them is such a pain.

Wish I could have an electronic sign I could flash up in my rear window saying "who the feck are you overtaking?" but no doubt it wouldn't make any difference.

grrr

I agree, unless there is a valid reason for not using the left hand lane, they should not sit in middle lanes.

tattifer · 23/03/2009 12:34

YANBU! I despise middle laners! I drove with someone once who just sat in the middle lane from Exeter to Bristol. Why? Because, said she, you're supposed to make as few unnecessary lane changes as possible.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/03/2009 12:35

they are clod's

central lane only drivers

springlamb · 23/03/2009 12:36

Yes, yes, yes this is getting to epidemic propotions on the M27, M3 and A3, roads I use regularly.
It drives me bonkers. Last week there was a horsebox pootling along in the middle lane of the M27 for about 7 miles (I turned off first).
Wish the control centre could flash up messages like 'MOVE OVER SILLY BUGGER IN THE RED MICRA' instead of 'Time to Junction 4 22 minutes'.
Not if you're around Mr Red Micra!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/03/2009 12:37

Most motorway miles in Scotland are two lanes. Imagine how irked one becomes at those who take up residence in the only overtaking lane.

tattifer · 23/03/2009 12:37

springlamb red micra pulling a horsebox - that I would have liked to see

Simplysally · 23/03/2009 12:39

They're probably doing it as they hate pulling out into lanes of traffic where people belt down them up to 120mph but it is annoying. Mind lots of people stream down the outside lane and never seem to move over either.

I hate it when one lorry tries to overtake another one on a hill - totally pointless as all they're doing is blocking two lanes to gain a few feet.

spiralqueen · 23/03/2009 12:42

Springlamb - great idea.

On the M1 last week I did pass a board saying "stay left unless overtaking" which was a start but I guess there were too many middle lane owners club members out there to name and shame individually

Members of the Middle Land Residents' Association are indeed at eipdemic proportions.

lalalonglegs · 23/03/2009 13:09

In my experience, the inside lane is made up of trundling Tesco delivery lorries and if you get caught between two of those then you are stuck as all the (more foresighted) other drivers overtake them at great speed. If the inside lane is empty then I'll stay there but, as soon as there is any chance of being caught in the slipstream of one of those monsters, I keep firmly to the middle lane. (I am quite a fast driver on motorways though so unlikely to hold anyone up too much.)

iamaLeafontheWind · 23/03/2009 18:55

Even worse is when the traffic starts queueing at speed in the outside lane to overtake the numpty in the middle, then another numpty undertakes the outside lane then tries to force their way back out again. These are the same people who complain when stuck in jams caused by this crap driving.

And breathe.

juneybean · 23/03/2009 18:58

Just to clarify isn't the outside lane the lane at the far left?

spicemonster · 23/03/2009 19:02

This is one of my massive bugbears. I was with a friend once who said she 'couldn't be bothered to keep changing lanes'

FGS, it's not exactly hard work is it?

benfmsmum · 23/03/2009 19:04

No juney the outside lane is the far right one!!! This is my pet hate, it really winds me up!!!!! Middle lane hoggers that is not u juney!!

Sorry for the typing but doing it one handed whilst "reading" bob the builder!!!!

juneybean · 23/03/2009 19:08

Hahaha no probs! I think I've always thought outside was left and 3rd lane was inside because it's in the middle of the motorway! I'm a bit crackers!

ummadam · 23/03/2009 19:53

You would hate me then The lft hand lane is full of slow lorries and you can never overtake them because of idiots zooming past at close to light speed . I figure that if I'm in the middle lane doing 70 there is still another lane to overtake me on if you are that keen to break the law and put other people at risk.

spicemonster · 23/03/2009 20:19

I use all three lanes. It's a question of watching out for what's up ahead surely? Getting stuck doesn't happen that often unless you're on a very busy motorway with lots and lots of slow moving traffic in the slow lane, in which case it's sensible to stay in the middle lane. But if there's a mile between trucks, why not pull over?

DisasterArea · 23/03/2009 20:24

but i like sitting in the middle lane. is safest. i can go a bit faster than all those big lorries and less fats than the fast people in the outside. if you want to go faster you should go around me. what is the point of all that in and outing and changing lanes. why don't you lot just stay in the same lane too. then we'd all be fine.
YABU. drive around me. unless i take it personally and speed up a bit just as you are overtaking then slow down a bit as you pull back in behind me.

tattifer · 23/03/2009 20:35

Disaster you're mad. The main driving lane for the motorway is the left hand lane. Both others are overtaking lanes only. You driving in breach of the road traffic act to use it any other way tut tut!

purpleduck · 23/03/2009 20:38

OMG, or when you are on a dual carriageway, and one slow moving lorry is overtaking another infintesimally slower lorry driver, and it takes so long...
ARGH!!!

tattifer · 23/03/2009 20:39

purpleduck if you read a book or file your nails, you'll find it less boring - works for me!

spicemonster · 23/03/2009 20:40

DA - you shouldn't be driving on the motorway IMO

PULL OVER YOU BLEEDING IDIOTS.

Sidge · 23/03/2009 21:05

I would like a big boxing glove on the side of my car that I can press a button and it zooms out and bashes the middle lane plonkers back over into the EMPTY inside lane where they should be.

Drives me bloody bananas.
