OMG! Shocking cartoon in today's Metro - serial rapists are fanicable apparantly

Oh my god, I am unable to make any sense of this - in today's Metro, page 31, the This Life cartoon shows this:

Two women in a bar, one drinking wine, one says to the other: "I met him on the internet - he's not interested in football, games consoles, old cars or the history channel - who cares if he's a serial rapist?'

This is absolutely disgusting! Or am I missing the point here or something? It's on a page with horoscopes, puzzles and sudoku - a bit of lighthearted stuff, then a joke about serial rapists. Not funny. Or AIBU?

I've logged a complaint with the newspaper editor, I wonder if they'll have the gumption to explain how this slipped through and got into the newspaper?

Please feel free to tell me I'm experiencing a sense of humour bypass and showing unreasonableness, but I think I'm right here...

and she's not gonna get decent sex from a man with a games console in his hand...
because they aren't capable. it's a comment about the paltry state of metro man, not either of the women in the picture.

i haven't checked the calendar lol, but it looks to be nearing flounce o clock.

mayorquimby · 09/03/2009 13:45

"I was raped by a Jewish doctor. It was bittersweet." Sarah Silvermen (Jewish commedian). Funny or not? "

isn't it followed by "but at least my mom was happy"
god i love sarah silverman

WilyWombat · 09/03/2009 13:46

Its way past flounce o clock

Katiekitty · 09/03/2009 13:47

Ok madwoman - which would you rather date: man with games console in hand or serial rapist?

Or, which would you recommend to a friend?

no - that would clearly be daft - i just saw the strip as being more a comment on masculinity rather than femininity. metro-man (or internet man if you prefer) is one version of masculinity ( a fairly emasculated version) whereas she is looking for sex (and isn't going to get it in competition with lara croft lol)

a comment on the nature of unsatisfactory 21st masculinity from both ends of the extreme - the games console holder at the one end, and a serial rapist at the other... what is a girl to do? it was trendy a few years ago to do the whole 'crisis in masculinity' thing - clearly after the lengthy increase in wimmin's studies, but i saw more reflections of the masc argument here than any fem thing tbh.

i just didn't get angst about subjugation - which i usually have a reasonable radar for... (ok i am a harridan - but that's me saying it, not benny hill)

Madwoman - odd that you read sex into the cartoon. There's no mention of her wanting it or getting it or not getting it. She's talking about dating.

The only time sex is alluded to is with the mention of violent sex - rape.

You've got sex on the brain!

I think Sarah Silverman is funny too - although am starting to think not many others on here do!

exactly tphg - sooooo many possibilities. but if katiekitty wants to leap on the obvious, fair play.

i've got about another 5 suggestions lol, none of them involving female subjugation. no-one wanted to talk about my female empowerment theory either

Boobz · 09/03/2009 14:08

How are the contractions coming along TPHW?

Katiekitty · 09/03/2009 14:08

Preg Hedge - yep, that's what it is: a single scene cartoon. You can look at it as it is, or analyse it deeper. Some people will do different things with it.

Madwoman - what's obvious about a serial rapist joke? God! I think I'm banging my head agains a brick wall here! You really seem to have no problem with serial rapists! Bless you for living in such a nice, safe world that you do.

KK,oh so now it's criticism and sarcasm because we don't all agree with you.diddums

your interpretation is a conspiracy theory.being purposeful obtuse to bang on about subjugation and oppression of women in media/society with no good cause in this instance

muffle · 09/03/2009 14:14

I think there is a brick wall in this thread and heads are being repeatedly banged on both sides of it.

thunk

Katiekitty · 09/03/2009 14:16

scottish mummy - no - I can take criticism, I haven't flounced as far as I am aware, I like this debate we're having. Please don't diddums me, I really don't need it, I'm not looking for agreement just debate.
I'm glad you don't find the cartoon offensive and this is why I posted in AIBU to see another side if poss.

i'm a gender counsellor lol. are you scared yet? it's such a nice, safe pretty world

waht's obvious about a serial rapist joke? um - we've been around this bouy a few times, but i'll try to encapsulate it for you. it's every woman's worst fear - to be sexually attacked and maybe bludgeoned to death afterwards. it's the ultimate fear - the worst possible scenario. i don't understand why you appear to be accusing everyone of being pro-serial rapists. my ideas may be fairly unlikely lol, but i'm having trouble understanding why you keep accusing people of being pro-serial rapists... there are quite a few of us with whacking great bruises on our foreheads at that one, honest, even the ones who agree the comic strip was out of line...
