To loathe the phone system in call centres that means they call and call but never speak

Today HSBC have called my landline and mobile 7 times, combined, I get to the phone very quickly to be greeted with silence because they've got to a different caller first.
I have better things to do quite frankly.

I thought these machines had been banned - and that now they have to give a recorded message when the person picks up and no operators are available.

It is possible that I have extrapolated that from someone making a suggestion on watchdog though

YANBU it's infuriating and apparently frightens vulnerable people who think it's a stalker.

YANBU, except that you really ought to use the Telephone Preference thingy which really does block most cold calls.

I had my first one of these calls the other day.. my phone rang, i answered, then it told me there was noone to talk to me and hung up.

I found it quite amusing that they called me to tell me they cant speak to me!
