to hate being kept waiting just because another patient is late turning up?

I had an appt today for a very quick procedure, and checked in about 10-15 minutes early.

I didn't get called in till 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment time, not for clinical reasons but because someone (another patient) was late.

AIBU to hate being kept waiting just because another patient is late?

It wastes not only my time, but the clinician's time too, and of course other patients'.

I understand "life" happens outside of doctor's and nurse's appointments, and very often appointments overrun for clinical reasons,

but why should everyone else's time be wasted just because another patient is late?

Surely it makes so much more sense to give each patient a fair time to turn up (my GP gives 10 minutes) and after that you take the next patient who has actually bothered to turn up (on-time, if not even early...)

AIBU?

YANBU.

In my surgery I've found that if someone turns up later than his time he is normally seen after those who turned up on time IYSWIM. Makes it much fairer.

yanbu, couldn't they have seen you, whilst waiting for the late person!!

mm22bys · 04/03/2009 12:35

Exactly.....the way they do things just incoveniences so many people, wasting my and other patients' time, and probably most importantly, the valuable clinician's time...

is beyond crazy.
my sister was told at an appt that they allow HALF AN HOUR for the patient to turn up in, rather than seeing the next person early. Insane.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/03/2009 13:14

YANBU - and feel sorry that you had to wait esp before having a proceedure...I get v nervous and would be very twitchy by then- hope it was ok

TotalChaos · 04/03/2009 13:15

yanbu, I wouldn't expect them to wait more than 5 minutes if I was late.

lottiebunny · 04/03/2009 17:46

At my dentist they give you 10 mins during which time they see the next patient. After that you aren't seen at all. Dentist still manages to run late all the time though.

YANBU. Lucky patient! I've worked many busy clinics where if patient not there on time they have to wait to be fitted in and if theres no time they have had to rearrange. (mind certain patients would have turned up any old time if that rule hadn't been in place

Spidermama · 04/03/2009 18:01

YANBU. They should have seen you first. I have a pathalogical loathing of lateness. Some people are late all the time. It's as if they think their time is more important than anyone else's.

I really think they should have seen you first. It's very unfair.

mm22bys · 04/03/2009 18:21

What annoys me the most is the the fact that the time we (me, other patients, the clinician) waited could so easily have been used! It is literally a waste not just of time, but the value of the nurse. The govt is always going on about patients not turning, wasted appointments, and that is exactly what happened in this situation.

A waste of OUR taxes.

Oh it makes me cross to even think about...

I work in the NHS and I hate it when people turn up late.
If the next patient is early I would take them in first but this doesn't always happen if the late person still arrives before the next person-eg if they had a long appointment.
We usually give them 10/15 mins when they would still be seen but obviously then you are late for everyone else.
Unfortunately the type of person who is late would probably also complain loudly if they are turned away so I end up seeing them to avoid causing a scene!!
