Ok I know this isnt really an AIBU topic but I wanted an answer before I went to bed.

Is it ok for me to change my name to something very similar to somebody else?

So say someone on here is called chloesmummy- dont know if they are I just made that up- would I be able to join under the name of chloemummy or chloesmum?

I dont want to jump the gun here but have seen somebody who I think is same person with conflicting life stories.. Just wanted to check really.

OP posts:
TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 10:10

What i think it is, a poster with e certain name posted about something very sad that happened to her. Another, establish d poster has a very similar name, who the OP knows in real life. she knows this sad incident did not happen to her RL person, so wonders if the similar named person is someone else, or is her RL person a loon who makes up very sad stories for fun.

No one on MN realised these people had slightly different names, and presumed them to be the same person.

lol i think anyway!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/03/2009 10:11

That's what I think too, TWB. But we did have fun last night.

TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 10:12

So i see

StercusAccidit · 04/03/2009 10:15

Well done..round of applause for TWB who was the only person to try and work it out

Reminds me of the krypton factor or sumfink

TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 10:17

lol it was just something she said though, that made me realise i knew who she was talking about. I think. lol im confusing myself now!

Do i get a prize?

Hmmm im not sure about it. But i dont think the OP has to worry, i think the "sad incident" person is not the established poster. I just think they were unlucky enough to have similar names!

My guess is that its Tiasmum/tiamummy who posted a very sad thread last year, and that tiasmummy is the OPs friend/RL person. I dont think anything untoward was going on though!

I could be totally wrong though!

hungrywhores · 04/03/2009 10:31

Thank god I am starting to understand a bit now. Thankyou TWB I thought I was going to pass out with confusion at all of the shit Harrysdad explanations.

MareWithAMitchyInge · 04/03/2009 10:33

I am really confused

but I like my new name and enjoyed seeing all the equids (equidae?) scampering about this thread

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/03/2009 10:35

I might change back again. Who shall I be though?

permatired · 04/03/2009 10:52

Hmmm, having looked at the threads Timorous reckons it is (I agree), I can't believe that the OP (of those threads) would make that up and it is just unfortunate that the other posters called her a name which happens to be that of another unrelated poster in their kind replies. I think the name similarity could easily happen in that if you wanted to be Xsmummy and found that didn't work you might well choose Xsmum instead. Sounds unfortunate rather than dodgy to me, and quite probably your friend isn't even aware of it.

Having said that, I can see why you were a bit alarmed as the name isn't espec common and would be awful to make up something like that (but I don't reckon she has, poor mum)

permatired · 04/03/2009 10:55

Well yes but isn't that just natural curiosity

TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 10:56

RIMOD - id hate to think people i knew were doing that!

permatired · 04/03/2009 10:58

This begs the question is it better to be anonymous and not fill in your profile page at all (so can ask sensitive questions you might not like to raise otherwise I mean) or is it better to have a comprehensive profile page so people can relate to you better?

permatired · 04/03/2009 10:59

Agree Timorous, it would be awful, that' why I fall on side of anonymity in above debate.

permatired · 04/03/2009 11:00

Oops, odd apostrophe there, but that's another thread altogether as we know!

Yes, I agree, that would be awful and very stalkerish.

permatired · 04/03/2009 11:07

Have to say it hasn't ever really occurred to me that anyone I talk with on here is anyone I actually know in RL only in so far as there are people from all over the world here so would be unlikely to be my nextdoor neighbour reading about my pelvic floor, but maybe it is - hi Jane!

TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 11:07

Thats what i meant, id hate to be "researched" but be totally unaware of it, by someone i knew.

TimorousWeeBeastie · 04/03/2009 11:08

though thinking about it, if i overheard a mum at the school mention MN and their username, id probably have a wee peek at their posts!

permatired · 04/03/2009 11:09

Aha!

StercusAccidit · 04/03/2009 13:33

I tell everyone my username on here just so they can be nosy lol

Everyone knows all my shit I'm a very open person (whingebag) sometimes to my detriment but hey
