I feel unreasonable about this, but i have lost count of the times that I have thought, oh i need X so i will just pop to woolworths to get it and then thought, oh, no, i wont will i! So despite me saying that i wouldn't miss it, i really really do - especially as i don't drive and a lot of the stuff they sold is just no available in town.

Some of the smaller retailers have, i noticed, started to stock some of the things you could buy from there so that is definately a GOOD thing, but for my own convenience - i bloody miss woollies!!

I do too. There have been times when I have also thought - 'you can get it in Woolies' and then done a double take..... such a shame.

TheCrackFox · 01/03/2009 10:58

I do too, and no other High Street shop seems to have filled the gap.

I used to shop at Woolies about once a week for various bits and pieces. It was only a 10 minute walk from my house, sob.

merryandmad · 01/03/2009 11:06

I miss their children's party dresses. They stocked them pretty much all year round- dd2 was at a birthday party last weekend and we noticed her party dress is going a bit short- but we can't replace it like for like.

mej3 · 01/03/2009 11:06

Me too. I am going to shopping centre today, and woolies was one of the few shops I would go into, now there is just big empty unit, my sunday shopping trip is just not as good.

princessmel · 01/03/2009 11:08

In town yesterday ds (6) said 'We haven't gone to Woolies yet' We had to tell him it was gone!

smartiejake · 01/03/2009 11:08

Oh God yes! I actually visit my high street alot less often as most of the odds and sods I wanted could only be bought there.

Very sad to see the Iceland sign going up a few days ago. (Won't be visiting them any time soon unless they decide to start a side line in cotton thread/ shoe polish/ tupperware boxes/ cds/dvds and various stationery products!)

twinsetandpearls · 01/03/2009 11:09

I said exactly this yesterday when dd and I were in town. Only five minutes from my house.

I know! When it closed, the commentators kept saying things like "It sold too many things and didn't have a brand identity"...WHICH IS WHY I LIKED IT!!

Surfermum · 01/03/2009 11:13

On our local news they said the manager of the Dorchester branch is setting up her own shop called Wellworths:

Wellworths.

I miss it too .

LucyEllensmummy · 01/03/2009 11:15

smartie - ours is going to be an iceland too - talk about lowering the tone!!

nannyL · 01/03/2009 11:24

i missed it yestruday when i was in town and for a moment decided to look for what i was looking for in woolies then relaised it was shut

worley · 01/03/2009 11:29

i had this thought thursday,
i needed a fancy dress suit for ds1, but argos only has adults and little childrens, nothing for a 10 yr old.
i said to dp, where is woolies when we need it!!

morningpaper · 01/03/2009 11:31

Me too - I keep thinking of things I NEED that I would have gone to Woolworth's for

I must admit that Wilkinsons has generally had the thingies though...

edam · 01/03/2009 11:52

I've had that 'ooh, I'll just pick that up in Woolies' moment. It was full of handy stuff. BitofFun's right, it was interesting to browse because it had such a wide range of stuff.

Bloody commentators, bet they are people who never ruddy well shopped there.

edam · 01/03/2009 11:53

Thanks for the tip about Wilko's MP, had forgotten they are a partial alternative.

Shitemum · 01/03/2009 11:56

I was thinking about Woolies this morning, wondering what will replace our local one. But also remembering that they NEVER had what we were looking for when we went in, it was a family joke!

catsmother · 01/03/2009 13:48

Woollies for me was a sure fire cheap - or even free - option of taking my 5 year old DD out "somehwhere" (admittedly an older child probably wouldn't have been so impressed .....) because she loved browsing round all the aisles and you could get out of there with a child delighted at a 50p purchase.

I agree Wilkos is good for bits and bobs type things, and its cleaning stuff and toiletries are good value, but the nearest one of those to me now is 12 miles away. Neither does it do the kids clothes and fancy dress (though Matalan is often good for fancy dress ..... but again, this isn't a high street shop, at least not where I am).

CrackerNut · 01/03/2009 13:52

Have really struggled to buy birthday presents since our Woolies went.

Our Barretts has also now closed meaning that the only shoe shop we now have is Clarks

We are apparently getting Primark where our Woolies was, which personally I am happy about but I know others won't be.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/03/2009 13:56

I just can't do Wilkos ..

Am I making it up, but I do recall a report that Ladybird clothing will be available online ... I didn't grow up in this country, but we did get Ladybird clothing and, for the price, it was good ...

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/03/2009 13:57

Cracker - SO miss the good pressies ...

upagumtree · 01/03/2009 14:10

Yip really miss Woolies. It was brilliant for so many things. I think "I'll just nip into woolies for XYZ" forgetting that it isnt there anymore. Such a shame. Ive never seen a wilkinsons in Scotland, so we dont have an alternative to woolies (maybe someone will put me right on this if I'm wrong but i haven't seen one). I heard that Woolies were starting up again as an online store...but it wont be the same

tootiredtothink · 01/03/2009 14:27

I have had to spend twice the amount on presents that I usually would had I been able go to Woolies.

And like others I'm not going to the high street so often. I've spent many a happy half hour killing time before school there. Now I stay at home.

ChippingIn · 01/03/2009 15:43

Absolutely - for all of the reasons listed above. I knew we'd miss it and we do. A few sweets, art supplies, birthday pressies, cards.... general mooching. Our high street was dire enough before woolies went - now it's a complete loss. Not sure what we are getting in the gaping hole yet - hopefully something nicer that Iceland. I'm sure I could look it up somewhere, but I think I'd rather live in hope for a bit longer!!
