It's a very difficult relationship to establish, this one.

Firstly- Are you sure your g/friend is certain about the long-term nature of your relationship firstly? That would affect her willingness to involve herself in your child's life for starters.

Secondly, she is right imo to proceed with caution. The aim should not to pretend to be the child's mother (doomed to failure with a 12 yr old), but to be another significant adult in her life- akin to an aunt-niece relationship. She can do fun things with her, but on most/all things disciplinary (barring those involving immediate danger imo) she will have to delegate to you, the child's natural parent. I think your girlfriend is right to be tentative, but maybe she also needs to have the chance to do something alone with your daughter (shopping maybe, or a trip to the cinema) to start to build a solo relationship with her.
