To think that this is a terrible concept for a film and the writers should be ashamed of themselve

Im pretty easy going when it comes to films and tv. while there are some programmes that i would never watch because i dont agree with the idea behind them, i accept that other people do. part of lifes rich tapestry etc.

however, Im horrified that a film has been released about a woman being haunted by the possessed spirit of her miscarried twin brother. it may be that im just ultra-sensitive on this subject. i accept that. but i think its a disgusting premise for a film.

Is this some sort of 'unborn twin' horror? YANBU to think it is a naff premise for a film but then so are most horrors IMO. I don't think its terribly original either.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/02/2009 08:53

its called the unborn. makes me shudder.

Don't read any Shaun Hutson then, particularly Spawn. TBH, if you don't like the sound of a film, don't go and see it. But this doesn;t sound any worse than, ooh, children murdering their parents, parents eating their children, women being raped by trees and various other horror classics.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/02/2009 09:04

but very few people have actually murdered their parents, been eaten by their parents or raped by trees. billions of women miscarry. surely that makes it different? and i wouldnt go and watch it. dont get chance to go to the cinema to see films i want to watch, let alones ones i dont

YANBU - I saw the trailer last night and it made me feel a bit sick (I was a twin and I've also had several mc's). It looked pretty hideous

But like SGB said, there are loads of films/books which I would steer clear of.

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2009 09:10

But you could say that about any film which features someone dying (eg of cancer or etc) - most people have experienced such things, but you can't stop someone wanting to make a film where that happens. Just don't see it if you know you will be upset.

Nontoxic · 23/02/2009 09:13

I very much doubt we'll ever see a film about cancer which has been made purely for shock/entertainment value.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/02/2009 09:14

exactly nontoxic!

I saw the 18 version of the trailer when I went to cinema a few weeks ago. It scared the bejeesus out of me as I'm a big wuss, and it looks very creepy. Having said that though I don't think the subject matter in itself is particularly 'shocking' (not really that original either) so I do think YABU, sorry.

I think you're focusing too much on a detail that probably isn't even dealt with in the film. IIRC all they do in the trailer is say she had a twin that died inutero - so it's not exactly a film about a m/c, it just might have one in the backstory.

(but I am sorry that you're upset)

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2009 09:31

Well I think most films are in essence made for those reasons, nontoxic - and to make money.

Nontoxic · 23/02/2009 10:30

Yes most films are made for those reasons - which is precisely why we're unlikely to see a film about cancer in the horror genre - they're generally weepies, which of course can make loads of money - but you're not being asked to go and see it as a roller coaster ride of thrills, action and gore.

themoon66 · 23/02/2009 10:34

YABU

Some of us love a terrifying horror film.

mayorquimby · 23/02/2009 10:37

sorry i do think yabu even if understandably so due to your own circumstances.
i don't find the subject matter shocking or think the writers should be ashamed of themselves. i do think it's a bit of a naff concept and doubt i'll see it (unless on sky) but if others find it entertaining then go for it.

intheLiffey · 23/02/2009 10:38

I don't know. It doesn't seem that dreadful to me. Maybe I'm a ghoul, but I'd quite like to see that!!

I love anything with a bit of supernatural in it!

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 23/02/2009 10:41

YABU, but understandably so.

I just wish they would stop showing the trailer on TV after 9. Yes I am old enough to watch TV after 9pm, that doesn't stop it giving me nightmares.

wannaBe · 23/02/2009 10:44

Not the sort of thing I would personally watch but I don't see anything wrong with the concept itself.

Tbh I think you're letting your own circumstances influence your judgement on this. It's a film, it's meant to be horror, not about miscarriage - about hauntings.

As an aside, I know someone who is absolutely convinced that her house is frequented by her dd's miscarried twin, even though she only miscarried at about six weeks.

theyoungvisiter · 23/02/2009 10:45

YABU I think - I do understand why you'd feel this way but ALL horror films have sick/shocking premises that might upset someone with personal experience of the issue.

Imagine watching Nightmare on Elm Street if you child had been murdered by a paedophile. Or Friday 13th if your brother was in a psychiatric institutution, do you see what I mean?

mayorquimby · 23/02/2009 11:10

or Mamma Mia if you were involved in a tricky paternity test and your suspected partner was shagging around greece? actually don't watch Mamma Mia it will give you nightmares.

DollyMessiter · 23/02/2009 11:12

I agree with you, Lissie.
I'm usually a horror fan, but thought the premise for this film was pretty dire.

Cloudspotter · 23/02/2009 11:13

I agree. An advert came on the radio for it, and I actually turned it off so dds couldn't hear it. The last thing I want is them having nightmares about it.

harleyd · 23/02/2009 11:14

yabu

intheLiffey · 23/02/2009 11:14

I've avoided Mamma Mia so far. Even though it's got PB in it. Not bad for an ol' folk.

If you held a gun to my head I'd rather watch Mama Mia than lawnmower man tho'
