My real name is quite easily shortened (not as easily as Katherine to Kate, for example, but in that league).

But I hate the shortened version, and frequently have to tell people not to call me that.

It feels really petty, but it irritates me so..

I ksomeone called things like Christopher and it's really hard to remember not to call him Chris. Part of me feels irritated at having been told off expecially when Chris IS short for Christopher and if I want to call him that, it's up to me.

wow - how rude and disrespectful of you - your friend/acquainances choice to ignore you.

Only my family used a diminutive of my name, so now just my sister.
Once worked for a chief executive that tried using the diminutive as a power play - she just used to bellow it out across the office louder and louder, and she was pretty loud to start with. She gave that game up after a couple of tries; I stood up and walked out to lunch the second occasion. The irony was that she had a double first name (eg Sarah-Jane), would use Sarah most of the time, but insist everyone used Sarah-Jane if she was pissed off - which was quite often, she was a foul woman.
