to be annoyed that wedding present from in-laws in a hoover

It's not the cost (well, it is a bit) but the unromantic practical nature when it is their only son getting married. And I do think it is a bit mean - they are not rolling in cash but they are not broke either. But if they spent the same but bought a thoughtful present I'd be fine about it.

Did you need a hoover?

notnowbernard · 21/02/2009 21:58

YABU

A gift is a gift IMO

Thunderduck · 21/02/2009 21:59

Unromantic? Did you marry them or their son? I wouldn't expect a 'romantic' gift from them.

YABU. And if it was a Dyson YABVU.

Oovavu · 21/02/2009 21:59

perhaps they are just unimaginative? was the hoover on your list?

GossipMonger · 21/02/2009 22:00

tis a great present - yabvvvu

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 22:00

You sound pretty ungrateful.

cornsilk · 21/02/2009 22:01

Is it a hoover or a vacuum cleaner? (pedant)

beanieb · 21/02/2009 22:01

Did you have a gift list? Was 'a hoover' on the list?

DaveTheHairyHandedTrucker · 21/02/2009 22:01

does your carpet need a clean?

screamingabdab · 21/02/2009 22:01

Is it the Dyson WITH THE ROLLER BALL?
If so, YABU

twinsetandpearls · 21/02/2009 22:01

Sounds like a very sensible wedding gift to me.

psychomum5 · 21/02/2009 22:01

oh god, my inlaws bought us a table and our bed, my aunt a washing machine, my mother a fridge and a cooker.

wedding pressies are supposed to practical IMVHO. they are for both of you to set up home with.

YABU

beanieb · 21/02/2009 22:02

... and did you give them the list?

CompareTheMeerkat · 21/02/2009 22:02

If you already had a fully functioning vacuum cleaner and they got you another one, then YANBU. But if you did want one, why does it matter what they got, really?

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 21/02/2009 22:02

It's traditional to give a gift for setting up home.

What type of romantic gift were you expecting?

CarGirl · 21/02/2009 22:02

I think I'd be grateful for the gift, not everyone gets one from their parents or PILs

feedthegoat · 21/02/2009 22:03

My parents bought us a dyson as a wedding present. We were chuffed to bits.

DaveTheHairyHandedTrucker · 21/02/2009 22:03

clearly she has dirty carpets

screamingabdab · 21/02/2009 22:08

Oh my God, Dave, you are right, not only is it not romantic, it's a bloody great hint about slovenliness! (In manner of buying soap for someone who smells a bit)

HappyMummyOfOne · 21/02/2009 22:09

I thought the idea of getting married was to declare your love for each other and the willingness to spend the rest of your lives together - not as a money making scheme to get presents.

YABU, be grateful you have been bought a present rather than moaning they have not spent enough.

Heated · 21/02/2009 22:10

Ok so you're not going to look back fondly in 30s years time at your Rollerball Dyson; it has a shelf life. But it is a far more pracitical gift than a fruit bowl.

Have you also checked that your future dh isn't also of the same, ahem, 'imaginative bent' when it comes to present buying?

screamingabdab · 21/02/2009 22:14

I quite like practical presents. I actually asked DH for a Slentertone belt for Valentines Day. Slightly miffed when he bought me champagne and chocolates

Nightcrawly · 21/02/2009 22:17

YABU, it a great present and if you don't want it you can send it to me!

psychomum5 · 21/02/2009 22:18

just to say, romantic pressies for wedding tend to be given only by the bride and groom, to each other, in the bedroom after the ceremony

ZZZen · 21/02/2009 22:19

what sort of present were you expecting/hoping to get from them?
