... to find the idea that women choose men for their money insulting?

a new study says women's orgasms are linked to the size of their partners' bank balances.

I am so fed up with reading all the time about how women select their mates solely for financial reasons. I never considered marrying a man for money. I was brought up to have my own career and make my own money.

I know there are obvious examples of young, beautiful women and hideous older rich men. I'm not saying some women don't do this.

But on a broader basis, isn't more true that men capable of making money are simply more attractive partners for many reasons, such as intelligence, confidence, attractiveness, etc.?

Did you choose your partner because of his bank balance?

Do you think so? I think it's more an argument to ensure that women are able to keep up their careers and retain as much financial independence as possible.

(I didn't marry for money btw, DH is poorer and shorter than me )

MT linked to the research paper on the other thread.

And the finding is that you are likely to be having more orgasms because he is a high quality partner pagwatch. Not that you love him for that reason. If you are Chinese. I think.

Fabulous symmetrical bottom?

cory · 18/02/2009 17:35

Choosing our man for his ability as a provider sort of implies that we don't think we'll ever be able to provide for ourselves. I'd rather have a cuddly househusband any day.

Pan · 18/02/2009 17:38

Ha! M.

To look at the > research....

Actually, self-reported frequency of orgasm, defined as 'always, often, sometimes, rarely, never'. I can't see any reference to rate of orgasms - number per month or such like. Which I think may be a weakness...

All else is speculation interpretation.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 17:43

x post with dittany re interpretation...

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 17:45

Does it mean they are a better lover? Or that their partner is a more enthusiastic recipient IYSWIM. If the female orgasm is adaptive, then it is all about the female partner perhaps?

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 17:48

You can read the full paper here

Pan · 18/02/2009 17:48

Also perhaps having the backing of a good income brings a confidence in men, which transfers tothe bedroom, or wherever.

IorekByrnison · 18/02/2009 17:50

Surely a far more obvious reason why women with rich husbands have more orgasms is that they are likely to be less tired and anxious at the end of the day. The women with low incomes are far more likely to have spent all day working long hours/looking after children/worrying about how to pay for their children's shoes etc.

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 17:52

Expat! I'm impressed! You been doing some crammin??

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 17:54

They have discounted "confounds such as women's age, health, happiness, educational attainment, relationship duration, wealth difference between the partners, difference between the partners in educational attainment, and regional location". Tiredness, no.

IorekByrnison · 18/02/2009 17:55

Quite, fm

Pan · 18/02/2009 17:56

By the look of things I'm sure they would have discounted it if they had thought of it.

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 17:57

BetAdad - the idea that women have orgasms to please men wen't out with the - um - ark, or desmond morris anyway

fizzpops · 18/02/2009 17:59

Maybe they choose them for the orgasms - the bank balance is an additional bonus

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 18:01

and men want their kids to grow up and so choose to stick around - women don't have to trick them into it. The study isn;t sexist at all - Dittany, et al - it's totally out of date evouluionary explanations of the kind Betadad offers up that are sexist. Evolutionary science was sexist, once upon a time, no more though. Target the right villans please and then attempt to reeducate not condemn.

SamsMama · 18/02/2009 18:01

Nah. DH and I are poor as church mice and I'd still rather have him than anyone in the world. It'd be nice not to have to worry about finances, but not nice enough I'd marry someone I didn't head-over-heels love.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 18:03

Evolutionary psychology.

Science? Debatable. In fact, debated.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 18:04

It's not about love - it's about orgasm per sexual encounter.

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 18:05

Okay, I'm here now. This is me. MT

Finally, a thread people need me on. Dons flack jacket at the ready

MiTochondrialEve · 18/02/2009 18:06

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 18:06
