For caring about my pets??

So we have two guinea pigs, both boys who are very close (as guinea pigs tend to be when brought up together).

Unfortunately, one of them fell ill yesterday and had to be taken to the vet. To cut long story short, he had to stay in overnight so I came home minus one guinea pig.

As soon as I got in, I heard the other one ... Gary sqealing his little head off. I went in to find the cage dumped in the middle of the kitchen floor with him stood in the corner 'crying'. (The cage is usually in the living room). So I went into the living room to find DH sitting there watching TV. I asked "why is Gary in the middle of the kitchen floor??" and he snapped

"Its done nothing but fucking screech since you went out! it was doing my head in so its staying there"

So I called him a cruel bastard, took Gary out of the cage and tried to comfort him. He was obviously scared and upset and I tried to tell DH he would have made him feel worse by moving the cage (and knowing DH in a temper, he wouldn't have done it gently).

DH then started whinging that I was "playing with the fucking rat when I could be making tea" I told him to make his own ffing tea, I had to see to Gary so he went and ordered a take-away for himself.

About 20 minutes later I settled Gary back into his cage. I then said to myself and to Gary I suppose "Oh, I wonder how Plankton is getting on without you" and DH came in and shouted (quite loudly) "ITS A FUCKING RODENT".

Gary shot under his house and stayed there shivering, he has not been out since.

I am so livid, what is the point in being such an arsehole about defencless animals??

No YANBU

I used to have guinea pigs and fortunately my dh was as upset as me when they were ill etc.

I hate the attitude that just because they're small, that you shouldn't care as much or be as upset as someone who has say a dog or cat. They're stil you're pets and you still love them.

Hope Plankton is ok and home soon.

Yanbu.
Your dh was being very mean.

There are a LOT of guinea pig fanciers on mn who will sympathise with you here. Poor basts - hope they are okay.

nickytwotimes · 16/02/2009 17:20

basts?!

BEASTS!

piratecat · 16/02/2009 17:21

men are such children at times.

poor Gary. Poor Plankton.

that was bloody mean of your dh, what a twat.

diedandgonetodevon · 16/02/2009 17:29

Poor little beasties. No, YANBU. Of course you should care for your pets

(Loving their names too!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2009 17:51

yanbu

we have hamsters and both dh and i are gutted when they die or are ill

poor gary - he is prob lost without his little mate

Devendra · 16/02/2009 18:24

Wanker! Make him make his own tea forever!

TheThoughtPolice · 16/02/2009 18:26

poor piggies

DH was mean

LOVE the name Gary for a piggy btw . Hope he and Plankton are reunited again soon.

Qally · 16/02/2009 18:27

Your DH is being an arse. Even if he isn't an animal lover, he should be concerned about how you feel about your pets being ill/distressed. To add to your upset is twattish, frankly.

morningpaper · 16/02/2009 18:29

YANBU to be annoyed with your rude husband

YABU to name your guinea pig Gary

hereidrawtheline · 16/02/2009 18:29

Your DH sounds like a wanker. It is good you love your animals. I love all ten of mine.

tankie · 16/02/2009 18:30

This is the bit that made me - "playing with the fucking rat when I could be making tea"

I would never make his tea again!

YANBU.. i would have been gutted if that was my pet.. I love my pets sooo much, to say its only a rodent to me would be like saying, well its only a baby, so why love it as much as a toddler.. lol..

Clattered · 16/02/2009 19:08

lol lol lol

Gary and Plankton

and were to tempted to give him the full Manuel 'Eesa guinea peeeg!' when he called it a fucking rodent?

Merrylegs · 16/02/2009 19:10

Gary

SweetAudrina · 16/02/2009 19:18

What's wrong with Gary?

Thing is, Plankton is a bit braver than Gary so chances are, he's not suffering quite as much, saying that though, he'll probably be all stressed out about being away from his familiar cage my poor babies.

Just to clear, he doesn't usually call on me to make the tea. Just I'd arranged to make something special last night before Gary's plight distracted me.

Other times, if he'd said that, I'd wrap the oven around his fucking head.

Are they named after Spongebob characters by any chance?

ladymariner · 16/02/2009 19:19

My cat's called Gary!!!

I'd have been livid aswell, and dh would be making his own "f...ing tea" for quite a while!!!

SweetAudrina · 16/02/2009 19:24

Yes they are named after Spongebob characters. They were originally named Gary and Squidward But we changed it to Plankton as he was always trying to "rule the world" (or rule the cage, anyway)

ladymariner · 16/02/2009 19:26

ds named the cat after the spongebob cat-snail too.
But he's not the one having to stand on the doorstep at night yelling "come on gary, there's a good boy!!!!"
