To be annoyed at another parent smoking in the playground?

A couple of weeks ago I was waiting to pick up ds1 when a parent walked into the playground with a cigarette. I went and politely told them that it was a no smoking area, thought it was a one off and thought not much more of it.
Today there was another parent smoking and trying to hide it while picking up their child! Couldn't say anything as ds2 and dd were both grumpy after their naps so I was trying to settle them.
AIBU to be angry about this? Both parents were stood on one side of a fence next to the queue of reception children coming out of their classrooms.

I agree it is uncouth to smoke in a school playground, but I don't think it's ilegal is it?

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 10/02/2009 16:15

are they not allowed to smoke outside in the playground then?

If they are not allowed then let the head enforce the rules.

If thay are allowed to smoke in the open air then you are being unreasonable.

fryalot · 10/02/2009 16:16

It probably is nowadays, DrN - you are not allowed to smoke on school premises so that would include the playground I would think.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 10/02/2009 16:16

Maybe these two people didn't know the rules. I have to say that it wouldn't occur to me that you can't smoke outside.

redclover79 · 10/02/2009 16:16

Don't know if it's illegal DrNortherner, but as far as I know it's against school poicy judging by the rest of the smokers standing outside the gate to finish their cigarette

Awful.

You should say something to DCs teacher, or drop by the office on the way home. Not a great example to set to children.

PrimulaVeris · 10/02/2009 16:17

YANBU - what squonk said. At school gate yes, in playground no.

DrNortherner · 10/02/2009 16:23

No one smokes at ours, not even at the gates. They would be immediatly pelted with stones if the dared to spark up.

Eve4Walle · 10/02/2009 16:24

Nobody smokes anywhere DDs school either. I don't think anyone is brave enough to.

Littlefish · 10/02/2009 16:31

All state schools are smoke free. You are not allowed to smoke on school premises, which includes playgrounds, even if outside.

I regularly ask parents not to smoke on the playground (I'm a teacher).

Last week, the Head had a report of two parents smoking dope and drinking beer at picking up time

Kitteh · 10/02/2009 16:31

In most schools smoking inside the school gates is against policy, same way like a pub can stop you smoking in its beer garden.. if this is the case, then YANBU..
