aibu to think twitter is narcissism of the highest order, taking what is essentially the 'what you are doing' line from facebook and expecting anyone to give a shit.

i think by definition, if you spend alot of time on-line "socializing" you're not out in the real world talking to people, i'm not saying i'm exciting....when i'm not o/l i'm watching the telly or in tesco...but i'm not living my life in cyberspace....and i would never waste a second of my life checking out some random i went to school with 20 years ago.

and twitter is for people who think they're everything but sad....reality check twitters....you're SAD!

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 12:39

Yes that's the kind of thing I love it for too. I got in touch with an old schoolfriend on fb it turns out she lives at the end of my road and her son goes to my dd's school! I go down there most Fridays to drink wine and catch up. Sometimes you lose touch because life and stuff gets in the way rather than not wanting to be friends.

exrebel · 16/02/2009 12:40

when I checked what twitter was about I had a related nightmare the same night about being followed.

The media are pushing this a lot. Suddenly media people (tv and radio etc) are dropping twitter in their conversation implying that we are all "twittering" (the new word that makes me vomit) which annoys me more that the existance of twitter itself.

sagacious · 16/02/2009 12:44

I have just signed up for twitter and someone has my MN name.

I can't understand what evryones rambling on about as I seem to be getting half conversations

And apologies to some mn'ers I've added.. you won't know me from Adam probably

VinegarTits · 16/02/2009 12:45

I spend a lot of time online because of my job (software analyst)

DP you dare to call me sad after admitting you spend your freetime in Tesco or watching TV pmsl, oh th irony

harleyd · 16/02/2009 12:47

ive just had to go look at it to see what you are all talking about, but i still dont know what it is because im too lazy to register
oh well

ginnny · 16/02/2009 12:48

People who use FB aren't all mindless idiots with no real friends same as MNers aren't all bored housewives with nothing better to do with their time!
My FB friends are all family members (lots of whom live abroad and i dont't get to see very often) and genuine friends, some are old school fi
I did try Twitter to see what all the fuss was about, but I really couldn't see the point.
Each to their own I suppose.

ahfeckit · 16/02/2009 12:57

daftpunk, I know what you mean by being out and about in the real world and conversing with real human beings...I take your point on board. I also have to do boring stuff like trips to tesco or get diesel for the car. I don't use the www when I'm caring for my DS, I only use if it I have a child-free day (like today!) or in the evenings. I just can't understand people who use Twitter endlessly all day when they could be meeting people in RL and basically just mixing with others instead of hiding behind a PC all day long.

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 12:59

I honestly don't think there are many people who use twitter all day most like me just pop in and out.

daftpunk · 16/02/2009 12:59

yes but VT, i'm not living my life on-line like you are...real people watch the telly and go to tesco you know!....i think it's very sad to spend alot of time on facebook, you ob have nothing else to do.

exrebel · 16/02/2009 13:01

I agree with Ginny about FB, it is totally a different concept and I can see the it serves a purpose, like MN.

The own's twitter description of its purpose is good comedy value. Examples in the why section:
Eating soup? Research shows that moms want to know.
Running late to a meeting? Your co?workers might find that useful.
Partying? Your friends may want to join you

ahfeckit · 16/02/2009 13:05

I think social networking lulls people into a false sense of security. They start to think that it's necessity in their lives. They can't possibly live without it. That's what's really the issue. It's not the fact that it's like TV and you do it to pass the time of day, it's the addictiveness of it that's concerning.

Another thing about Twitter that doesn't really add up is that you can't have a 'conversation'. it's all one sided. you can follow stephen fry (for example) but he doesn't see your comments you are aiming at him. so why bother wasting your time typing something out to him if he's not even going to acknowledge you??? it's just a waste of time (IMO).

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 13:05

Erm Daftpunk (and yes it is sad that i've bothered to look) but you have been on 57 threads on here since Saturday . Just because someone goes on online sites, social networking or whatever does not mean they are living their life online or that they are sad!

sagacious · 16/02/2009 13:07

daftpunk .. ouch

daftpunk · 16/02/2009 13:08

yes, but i don't go on any other site...somepeople are on here and on facebook....and god knows what else.

57 threads? are you sure!

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 13:09

Yes lol according to advance search.

daftpunk · 16/02/2009 13:10

rubbish....you're facts are wrong

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 13:11

Sorry 58 messages not threads. I however have been on 7!

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 13:11

57 threads would be ridiculous wouldn't it.

booge · 16/02/2009 13:12

"try talking to people in the real world...hmm other humans..."

Please tell me who I'm communicating with online if not human? Monkeys? Dolphins? Robots?

"real people watch the telly and go to tesco you know!"

But apparently not online.

daftpunk · 16/02/2009 13:14

ledodgy...you're nuts

VinegarTits · 16/02/2009 13:14

Er sorry but can you just clarify how you know for sure what i do in life?

Because i check my FB once and day that means i am spending my life online does it? your showing your ignorance now

If you had bothered to read my earlier post properly you will see i mentioned i am online bcause of my job, which means i am able to use MN, FB and twitter when i am not so busy, out of work hours i dont bother coming online because i have rl things to do, of which you would have no idea as you dont know me

so whats your excuse, you have the cheek to tell me i waste my life online while your sitting here wasting time on MN, are you at work like me then? why do you bother with MN at all then, why not do something constructive, like watch telly instead? arent you missing jeremy kyle or summit?

Ledodgy · 16/02/2009 13:15

Well you're right on that one.

But I am not sad and I do have a life. I am only on here now because the older two are out swimming with the inlaws and the baby is asleep. Of course if you twittered you'd already know that.

daftpunk · 16/02/2009 13:25

ledodgy...as lovely as you sound...why would your domestic time-table be of any interest to me?

RubberDuck · 16/02/2009 13:28

The trick to Twitter is to tailor it to your own preferences. I don't bother to follow any sleb twitters (or the twitterati) because as you say - there's no conversation - they follow far too many people to bother replying to any message they get. What's the point?

I treat twitter more like a mass-IM system. I'm lucky in that I've gradually found like minded people to follow and we can have a joke and a laugh, it becomes two-way instead of a write-only medium.

Twitter is very much about who you follow and how you interact on it - it's just a tool, it's up to you how you use it.
