to be such a control freak that I am vetoing dh's choice of song at his funeral (hypothetically)

You know when you have those conversations about the type of funeral you would like in theory? well dh and i had one of them and his taste in music is so rubbish I said I wouldn't have any of those songs and that he wouldn;t know anything about it anyway... and then he said I'm being unreasonable and has promised to haunt me if I don't play his songs. But they are dire and I would be embarrassed that people remembered him like that

I like that sorrento, that was Scott & Charlene's incidental wedding song.

nellyfin · 05/02/2009 22:19

OMG Hassled. Im with you on The Wedding Present. My DH went to see them last year and listens to their stuff ALL the time. I thought he was their ONLY fan!

twentypence · 05/02/2009 22:22

I went to a funeral with "always look on the bright side of life". Not my taste, but then it's not about me is it?

I would pick Barbers Adagio for strings for dh because they use it (a lot) for Top Gear segments and it's also tasteful.

Don't know what else he'd want Test Match Special music, Match of the Day, that guitar piece that has the Nokia ring tone in it?

Metatron · 05/02/2009 22:40

my guitar playing music obsessed husband wants this

I'd like 'The Show Must Go On' by Queen played at mine.

It depends on what your DH has asked for. If it's something like The Birdie Song or Lilly The Pink then I guess you'd have reasonable grounds to be hesitant, though it might take the edge off when the stereo starts up and there's a titter round the room as folk try to suppress a giggle and try desperately hard not to dance at The Birdie Song.

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/02/2009 09:28

Has he asked for "Agadoo"?

HeadFairy · 06/02/2009 09:31

YABU I'm afraid unless of course it's Wind Beneath my Wings which would have my barfing in to my hankie.

come on OP, tell us what he wants!

Leo9 · 06/02/2009 09:44

Well, just tell him you'll play whatever he wants - he won't be there to check, will he?!

Sorry if I am distastefully irreverent but I have never 'got' this at all - it's for the people left behind after all, you won't be there when you're dead so who cares!

Oovavu · 06/02/2009 10:20

OJ - Steve chose some lovely songs x

My dh's taste in music is bizarre to say the least. He says he wants something by Tindersticks which I promise I've tried to listen to but it sounds like Droopy singing Lenard Cohen - his voice absolutely puts my teeth on edge. He also loves Nick Cave (would consider this but he's also very hit and miss imo) or The Fall . I could stomach the Fall, I think.

But am trying to steer him towards our 1st dance from the wedding - Wichita Linesman! I'm fine with slightly obscure or unexpected... but Tindersticks, really

I think if we played Wind beneath my wings I'd throw myself in the coffin with him.

lol at the thought of 'Fame'

Oovavu · 06/02/2009 10:22

oh just thought - his absolute favourite song of all time is Teenage Kicks. I would absolutely have that one for him. Just got to persuade him now! He's saying he'll have tindersticks just to spite me

My Aunt who recently died had Spirit in The Sky by Norman Greenbaum...I didnt realise how suitable the words were till i sat there listening!!

mayorquimby · 06/02/2009 11:20

wel lets hear your choices for your funeral so we decide wether you do in fact have good taste in music.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 06/02/2009 11:23

My DH says that he wants the countdown piece of music played as he is cremated (you know the do-do, do-do, diddly-do one). He thinks it will be a good joke and his final bit of humour. I have similarly said that I don't want to and that he won't know any different at that point....

MummyDoIt · 06/02/2009 11:24

DH always said he wanted to go out to Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf so that's what he got. It raised lots of smiles. The other one I chose was 'Your My Best Friend' by Queen. They were his favourite band and the lyrics just said exactly what I felt about DH.

Fimbo · 06/02/2009 11:28

Wind Beneath My Wings was played at my friend's funeral, it was terrible and just made everyone cry all the more. If it comes on the radio now I have to switch it off. I would hate for anyone to be left feeling like that because of a song at my funeral, therefore I want something upbeat and to make everyone smile. The Birdie Song is actually looking good at the moment.

MmeLindt · 06/02/2009 11:33

Havent heard of the Tindersticks, have just had a look on youtube. By God, they are strange. This one sounds like when we used to put singles on the record player but set it for albums.

I quite like Queen, It's A Beautiful Day. And I love Somewhere Over The Rainbow, the version by the Hawaiian guy whose name I cannot spell.

DaDaDa · 06/02/2009 11:48

I think The Fall would be highly inappropriate for a funeral. Maybe East Y'self Fitter would be OK for the wake...?

The Weddoes would be OK. Perhaps You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends If DW tried to veto my song choices she'd be joining me in the box.

DaDaDa · 06/02/2009 11:50

Tindersticks always remind me of Vic Reeves' club style singing.

ShowOfHands · 06/02/2009 11:56

MmeLindt, I want Iz's (so much easier than spelling it in full) Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World and Thea Gilmore's version of When I'm Gone.

My Dad's having Devil Gate Drive and the Monster Mash!

MarmadukeScarlet · 06/02/2009 11:58

OJ Solsbury hill by PG is one of my fave songs ever.

I would like this, as a message to my DC (please ignore the MJ video cannot find another version of song) I love Peter Gabriel I love the lyrics.

At my brother's funeral my mother and his gf chose 2 songs that my DB would never have listened too in his life!

ShowOfHands · 06/02/2009 11:59

DH has just put Tindersticks album on. It's unique. Evokes desolation in quite a poignant way.
