to not take my kids to school?

My childrens school is over 2 miles from our house, we have to drive as Ds1 and Dd1 both have cerebral palsy and can't walk that far. We had more snow last night, and none of the roads on the estate have been gritted so now we have sheets of ice under snow!! The school is attempting to open, but if teachers can't get in, they will close and notices will be put on the gate. I am not willing to risk our lives to get all the way there to be told that its closed TBH.

will be phoning the school to see if anyone is there at 8:30 and telling them I am not taking the kids in today, it was bad enough yesterday, took 10 minutes to get off the estate which normally take 2 minutes. The roads started to melt yesterday and then froze overnight, plus more snow..

pmsl Riven, I am a wimp. DS1's wheelchair doesn't handle snow well, we tried yesterday, and it was getting stuck on the ice snow the snow.

Yanbu, stay at home for sure.

I'm trying to think of an excuse to stay home, but the school reopened today and even tho a 15 min walk will take over 30 mins, i guess i should really try

lisad123 · 05/02/2009 08:07

My DD1 school is open and i went and got sledges yesterday I has to walk 10 mins (20 in the snow) uphill with a buggy but will take her in, she loves school.
If I were you SGK, stay home and enjoy the snow. I certainly wont be driving down your street anytime soon

SparklyGothKat · 05/02/2009 08:08

you will have muscles when you get back if nothing else!! I would walk them, but its soooo far and we had a stupid amount of snow (over 10inches) so everywhere is covered..

We're in Bedfordshire and the school is open but says if you stay off it wouldn't be unauthorised.

You should stay at home

67Impala · 05/02/2009 08:17

I'm not taking my DS in today as last time I did in this weather, I couldn't get the car back home.

lizziemun · 05/02/2009 08:24

Idris

Your dc's school must be one of the few that open then.

I'm in Luton and dd1 is shut along all the others it seems.

Wish I hadn't sent dd this morning. She goes on normal service bus not a school bus. No announcement on school closures on local radio and they ask parents not to ring the school so I sent her in. She got there to find the school closed. She is now attempting to get home though will probaly have to walk as the buses have stopped running our way because we live on a hill. She wasn't very pleased at the prospect of walking 2.9 miles in the snow (not 3 miles ...she'd get a free bus pass if it was and I wouldn't have wasted £2.20 too!!!!!)

Litchick · 05/02/2009 09:05

School open but we aint going.
Am not prepared to slide into a ditch as I saw a car do yesterday.

bratnav · 05/02/2009 09:05

YANBU

DD2s school is closed, but DD1s isn't. It is 1 1/2 miles away up a steep hill which I have no intention of driving or walking up, also they can be company for each other.

I just called the school and they were completely cool with it.

CherryChoc · 05/02/2009 09:11

Oh no kiddiz, can she get a bus part of the way?

Grr I still remember with resentment how my school was the only one open in the area one year. This was post mobile phone invention so we all knew about it as well!

But is it just me who secretly quite likes being at school/work when there is hardly anyone there?

bronze · 05/02/2009 09:13

In your situation I would take the day off. Most other people I would say were nesh

IdrisTheDragon · 05/02/2009 09:20

DS's school is the Lower School, the middle school in our village is shut. I think there aren't so many teachers in today but they can cope better with a smaller school.

SparklyGothKat · 05/02/2009 09:24

school were fine with it, i said if we lived closeer i would walk them, and the sec. said thats it too far to expect my kids to walk.
