I really don't think I am. Eating corned beef IS like eating cat food.

It's disgusting stuff and I really don't know how people can do it.

So there.

I have never eaten corned beef, not even in the 70's

differentID · 28/01/2009 19:23

it's lovely!

Thunderduck · 28/01/2009 19:24

What are happy stars?

loobeylou · 28/01/2009 19:26

i worked on tesco meat counter when I was a student, the corned beef def. comes out of a tin, and the last 6 or 8 slices are SO fatty, thick whitish gunk all over - where the fat has settled to the bottom and sides of the tin, gross - BUT, we would have people asking for their slices off the fatty pile almost as often as people asked for the leaner pile, honest!

wasn't corned beef invented for the troops in the war? (I might have made that up, but I don't think so)

ineeedtostopworrying · 28/01/2009 19:29

dont like corned beef

but hate pork pie more

brimfull · 28/01/2009 19:29

I love corned beef.

eekamoose · 28/01/2009 19:29

Oh yes Mary. You are quite right.

Not so long ago I was feeling nostalgic for my childhood and a bit credit crunched. So made corned beef hash and ...

It was like totally SALTY catfood. I so couldn't eat it. Infact, if it had just tasted like cat food, rather than unbelievably salty cat food, I might have tried a bit harder to enjoy it.

As it was, I found it utterly inedible. And there are very few things I can say that about normally .

pointydog · 28/01/2009 19:31

aren't you thinking of spam, looby?

loobeylou · 28/01/2009 19:36

pointy, no,LOL, though that also comes out of a tin, as does tongue , luncheon meat etc etc

now, theres a blast from the past. TONGUE, for the uninitiated, it's literally rolled up animals tongues in a set yellow jelly then sliced yum yum (NOT)

oh, and I found this if anyone's interested

"They (corned beef tins) were originally made in the tapered shape so that they would fit more compactly in British soldier`s knapsacks in either the Boer War or the 1st World War. My father always swore that British Army cooks in the 2nd World War were issued with a special recipe booklet called 1001 ways to cook bully beef "

NotSoRampantRabbit · 28/01/2009 19:41

Oooh I LOVE corned beef.

Did you know that M&S have recently brought out a range of 'retro' british classic sarnies, one of which is corned beef and pickle?

They are marvellous. I had one on the train home from work the other day as a pre-supper snack.

YUM.

Goober · 28/01/2009 19:43

Nasty stuff!

Tis like what I'd imagine dog shit tastes of.

differentID · 28/01/2009 19:48

lol Goober.

I think we might perhaps put corned beef in the category of controversial foodstuffs that very few people don't have an opinion on- like marmite.

Goober · 28/01/2009 19:55

2 topics of conversation that are best avoided are:
Religion and politics.
dog shitCorned beef should be added to the list.
Marmite however, is superb!

differentID · 28/01/2009 20:19

marmite is fucking foul.

mm22bys · 28/01/2009 20:25

YANBU.

Marmite but Parwill!

lou33 · 28/01/2009 22:42

i like marmite too

NormaJeanBaker · 28/01/2009 22:44

I love it. And I used to think that Pedigree Chum looked very tasty when they cut the tin shaped lump of dog food in half on the ad and said 'solid meaty nourishment'.

And I like chitterlings.

EyeballsintheSky · 28/01/2009 22:46

No, corned beef was definitely around in the trenches. Along with biscuits which were like that stuff you give budgies to sharpen their beaks on, totally indestructible, even the Kaiser couldn't touch them.

Corned beef in posh slices is lovely between two pieces of toast and 30 seconds in the microwave so it goes all warm and squishy. Mmmmmm.....

NormaJeanBaker · 28/01/2009 22:48

What - corned beef was around in the trenches? Can't you get any made more recently?

Ronaldinhio · 28/01/2009 22:48

corned beef + hp sauce sandwiches

heaven

yabvu

NormaJeanBaker · 28/01/2009 22:54

Corned beef hash and beans. Yee ha!

EyeballsintheSky · 28/01/2009 22:55

Nope. It was mass produced and we're still trying to clear the corned beef mountain

Then we have to move onto Spam

naswm · 28/01/2009 22:57

I am loving this thread!

Katisha · 28/01/2009 23:00

I love corned beef.

Perhaps therefore I'll also love cat food?

Ronaldinhio · 28/01/2009 23:02

sometimes cat food smells appetising though.

Isn't that what all old people eat?
