been called a homophobe because I object to a same sex couple being allowed to adopt young different sex children over heterosexual couples

a racist because I object to mass immigration

a f b because I think people who work and contribute to society should be given more help than those who don't (the disabled excluded of course)

It seems that there is a thought police at work on MN and I should feel ashamed of my opinions because they may be different from anyone elses .

Are'nt people allowed to express their own thoughts without being subjected to abuse anymore?

OP posts:
stickybeaker · 28/01/2009 18:42

If you're able to back up your opinions rationally then good luck, but getting angry doesn't help your cause.

TheFallenMadonna · 28/01/2009 18:42

I wouldn't necessarily call you a homophobe over the adoption thing, but the "as nature intended" comment - that's homophobic.

thisisyesterday · 28/01/2009 18:42

well, of course you are allowed to express your own thoughts.
but I think that the vast majority of people won't tolerate prejudice in any form. that doesn't excuse foul language.

Watusi · 28/01/2009 18:44

The first two labels are descriptive not abusive (though I don't know if they were justified, having mised the threads in q)

the last is a term that should not be used against another poster and you can report it

fryalot · 28/01/2009 18:44

you are completely allowed to express your own thoughts

Just as those who find your opinions offensive are allowed to express their thoughts on the subject.

Personally, I'm all for tolerance.

MitchyInge · 28/01/2009 18:45

what does the F B stand for? is it fascist something?

spongebrainbigpants · 28/01/2009 18:46

I'm all for tolerance too, but somehow find it very hard to tolerate the intolerant.

So shoot me .

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 28/01/2009 18:47

of course you are. And people are free to express their opinions about your opinions. And you can express your opinion about their opinions.

And they can express their opinion about your opinion of their opinion

Such freedoms work both ways.

  • agree with stickybeaker, that people are less likely to respond so bluntly if you say "I disagree with X because of..." than if you say "I think all immigrants should be sent back on the next boat"

however, it is not acceptable to resort to personal abuse. Someone who does so, kind of loses the moral highground they are aiming for, don't they?

Katiestar · 28/01/2009 18:47

No YANBU
I think the examples you gave are all common sense and I am a bit fed up of people playing the racist/homophobic card to shout down any argument against them

wannaBe · 28/01/2009 18:47

I think it depends on how you expressed them.

Tbh, it wouldn't surprise me if there are others who share your views but who wouldn't express it and would cry homophobe/racist/whatever along with the rest of them...

plantsitter · 28/01/2009 18:48

You choose to comment on some sensitive issues which is, of course, perfectly acceptable.

What isn't acceptable is getting angry if people disagree with you.

If somebody has been verbally abusive (i.e. sworn) at you, you should report it.

Watusi · 28/01/2009 18:50

Where was the racist thing, I can only find your homophobic turn

MitchyInge · 28/01/2009 18:52

still wondering what F B stands for

fryalot · 28/01/2009 18:53

I read it as "fucking bitch" but it could have been "fat bastard" although I fail to see why anyone would call her a fat bastard for posting on a benefits thread (although I didn't see the thread in question so it's possible...)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 28/01/2009 18:54

Face Booker natch

A terrible insult in my book

fryalot · 28/01/2009 18:55

frilly butcher?

MitchyInge · 28/01/2009 18:55

there are only 2 *s for each word tho

so maybe Fik Bch?

OP, you posted this: 'If you think that two young male and female children are better off with a gay couple, rather than a male and female couple than you must surely be a little warped as are the social workers' which is pretty damn offensive

explainez-vous please

BoysAreLikeDogs · 28/01/2009 18:56

oh I know

Flaps of Beef

tiredsville · 28/01/2009 18:56

I don't know what has prompted the other issues you mentioned, but FWIW I actually agree with you on the adoption topic. I really couldn't care less about being flamed either.

fryalot · 28/01/2009 18:58

lol mitchy!

fat bum

(ha! that must be it really... two spaces in each word, f and b word accounted for... do you have a large backside dizzy?)

Thunderduck · 28/01/2009 18:58

I said you were homophobic because you clearly are,and you obviously object to homosexual couples adopting/raising children at all.

Thunderduck · 28/01/2009 18:59

And earlier you said you couldn't care less if I think you're homophobic, but clearly you do. Which is it?

"a little warped" ? really? OP said that?

hahaha

look, Dizzy - you can't complain about other people having a go about your opinions if you start the exchange off by saying that anyone who holds an opinion that you happen to not agree with is "warped"
