To buy baby clothes from Ebay?

memoo · 27/01/2009 19:37

Long story short, I'm pregnant with my 3rd, baby isn't due til sept but we are absolutly broke, struggling to pay the rent let alone buy new baby things.

So I decided to start buying a few little things each week from ebay. I've bid on some babygrows and a pramsuit, both used but look lovely and clean.

I was casually telling a work colleague about it today and she turn her nose up when I told her I was getting stuff from ebay. She said she "would never put her baby in second hand clothes" and "you don't know where they've come from" she went on to go on about how baby clothes aren't really expensive anyway etc etc

Maybe I'm being over sensitive but she made me feel really bad, as though I was getting second best for my baby but the way I look at it is that the baby won't know or care and newborns are only in stuff for 5 minutes so even second hand stuff will have lots of wear left in them.

Like I said, maybe I am being over sensitive (pregnancy hormones are raging) but she has made me feel like I'm not doing the best for my baby.

Is it really so bad to get second hand clothes for a new baby?

daftpunk · 28/01/2009 13:43

good idea...i'll ride out of town now..

... yeeeee haw!

till we meet again dudes...

and happy ebay shopping!

Anglepoise · 28/01/2009 13:43

Good point Doris (though mamadiva I'm no angel either - other day paired my Traidcraft cardie and No Sweat trainers with a dress from the Gap and leggings from Topshop )

WriggleJiggle · 28/01/2009 13:46

I was sorting old photos recently, and came across photos of 5 different children wearing the same item of clothing - (2 cousins, 1 friend's dc and my dc. Am now tempted to put said clothing away in a box to await dc3!
Next clothes seem to be particularly hard wearing

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 13:51

To OP: no, YANBU.

Erm, let's say, "hypothetically" (for daftpunk's sake ), I was going to sell a bundle of baby clothes on ebay. What would I "call" the listing in the title? You know, just hypothetically.

onebatmother · 28/01/2009 13:52

"lovely bundle of baby clothes, 3-6months, gap/boden!"

onebatmother · 28/01/2009 13:53

lovely bundle of girl's/boy's ..

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 13:54

Hey, onebat. OK, so, hypothetically speaking, I would call it a "bundle" - not a "lot", or something else.

Y'know - just wondering, like...

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 13:55

'Cause, hypothetically speaking, the theoretical me would want as many people as possible to find it on ebay.

But that's only the theoretical me, of course.

Thanks!

MrsBadger · 28/01/2009 13:57

be as descriptive as possible in the word limit, and even more descriptive in the body text.
And I don;t mean 'lovely, oh so cute and soft, ur liddle man will look just gorgeous in these' descriptive but be accurate and use words people will search for. Imagine you were trying to buy just such a bundle

Eg:

Title:
lovely bundle of autumn / winter boys' clothes aged 9-12m inc Next, Monsoon, dungarees and jumpers

Body Text:
Brown cotton jumper with bear logo, Next , 9-12m, slight bobbling to cuffs
Set of 3 long-sleeved cotton t-shirts (orange, khaki, navy), popper neck, Next, 9m
etc etc

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 13:59

Thanks, Mrs Badger. Do you do a lot of imaginary selling on ebay?

blueshoes · 28/01/2009 14:03

Penth, to add to MrsB, sell girls' clothes and boys' clothes in separate bundles. Within each, group the clothes by age group. Mention all brands if they are desirable. Lots of clear pictures. Show how people can mix and match the clothes.

girlylala0807 · 28/01/2009 14:04

I think some people have missed a few points here.

Clothes for most shops in this country are made in sweatshops. If you buy second hand clothes from Gap on ebay that does not mean it was not made in a sweatshop.

FWIW, i would (and will in 10 weeks ) be dressing my child in second hand clothes from family and friends.

I would not buy from ebay because or a charity shop because of something someone said to me once. If you get clothes from family you know whats happened to the child they came from. If you buy them secondhand you dont know why they are being given away... I will say no more on that subject.

And yes, my family are all very suerstitious.

MrsBadger · 28/01/2009 14:05

oh, lots, Pen

don't forget to use a decent typeface and font size and a legible colour - no flahsing blinking flowers

also spelling and grammar

remember the kind of buyer you want to deal with

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 14:11

Ok, thanks for the tips, MrsB.

Don't worry, girlylala0807 - my hypothetical and imaginary bundle of 3-6m baby girl's clothes are not in any way haunted.

[wwwwooooooohhhhh ghosty emoticon]

Ahem.

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 14:12

Thanks to you too, blueshoes.

girlylala0807 · 28/01/2009 14:17

Lol penthesileia,

I never used to buy into that stuff till I found myself pregnant... very strange.

MrsBadger · 28/01/2009 14:19

NB do not waste words putting 'baby' in the title if you have already put '3-6m'

Penthesileia · 28/01/2009 14:20

Smart thinking, MrsB!

onebatmother · 28/01/2009 14:48

also, a bit of styling helps... I got a lot more for the shoes on my profile page, in combination with a slightly gushy boden-style blurb, than I had done with a similar pair.

""i'm thankful i wasn't the type of mother who would buy 2nd hand for new borns"

what does that mean, what kind of mother does it make me because I will?

It sounds very much like you are implying that I am a bad mother because I sometimes buy DC second hand clothes

onebatmother · 28/01/2009 16:17

it rather does, doesn't it?

LucyEllensmummy · 28/01/2009 16:32

has daftpunk answered my question about her name history yet?

EachPeachPearMum · 28/01/2009 17:07

LEM- dp has said on other threads she was tm, yes.... Is that significant? (a brief precis would do, rather than me having to trawl )
