Is it bad form to bitch about Christmas presents?

Only my brother and his wife got all the DCs in the family one of these each for Christmas. Pink versions for the girls.

I was annoyed as they showed such little thought for the individuals, their ages etc. They've got pots of money too so it's not like they couldn't afford a nice book or something.

Imagine DS's face when he opened a freaking blanket up. MIL has one very similar for her dog.

I don't care how much a gift costs but don't get crap like this, please. It just shows you don't actually give a shit.

They'd be lovely on a pram as well. I am slightly pissed off with your brother and sil though as it is probably due to them they are out of stock. I really want one for ds2!

yabvu. a couple of months ago we bought a lovely fleece blanket to cozy up to watch dvd's etc. When doing Christmas lists my 4yo asked for a snuggly blanket like mummy and daddys one. We bought him and 8yo a spiderman one and my 2yo a thomas one. One of their favourite presents this christmas. They can be used as a blanket , a cape, a mat - and they've only had them a week. Ds was also bought a power rangers towel which he loves - we don't need the towel like you don't need the blankets but its his own and he loves it and its practical.

Bil bought fleece blankets for the ds's this Christmas (Ben 10 and Cars). They have had them on their beds every night and dragged them downstairs every morning since! They love them - great presents I think.

ledodgy - I should imagine that sized blanket may be a little too warm for a pram, as you'd have to fold it up quite a bit and therefore it would be awfully warm

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 01/01/2009 17:17

Pmsl I didn't look at the size!

SugarBird · 01/01/2009 17:49

I think they are lovely. After much thought, I gave a fleecy blanket to my dn for her birthday a couple of years ago and she loved it (hope sil didn't come onto mn and tell everyone it was a crap gift ). My dc would also like them. I don't understand why this is a thoughtless present. YABU

I have bought DCs and their friends towels and fleecy sleeping bags before - such as Ben 10, Buzz etc. Would have thought that kids would have liked things like that.

I bought DD a similar blanket for Christmas and she loves it. We're both constantly dragging the duvets up and downstairs so I thought it was great to get blankets instead.

She's been using it as a mat on the floor too and has used it to tuck her teddies up in.

I think it's a good gift.

PestoHaggisMonster · 01/01/2009 18:53

What lovely presents. YABVVVVVVVU.

Miyazaki · 01/01/2009 18:58

Well in theory I do think it is bad form to bitch about Christmas presents, but I would be hacked off by the lack of thought shown if it was my db.

I don't buy practical things (clothes/toothbrushes/whatever) for my dc for christmas as I remember hating it as a child. And neither do they get piles of plastic crap.

andaSOLOnewyear · 01/01/2009 19:10

I was up until 3am on Christmas morning finishing off two fleece blankets to give as Christmas presents. Everyone loves my fleece blankets...Why don't you send the blankets to me and I'll personalise them for your Dc's for a small fee? Your Dc's will love them because they will become special.

innapropriate · 01/01/2009 19:20

I like them, its something they can keep. Much better than huge, plastic crappy toys that will just gather dust for the next 12 months after the initial excitement has worn off.

Desiderata · 01/01/2009 19:48

As a point of order, Winky, this is not the first time you've accused someone of drinking when they happen to disagree with you. Maybe you protest too much?

With regard to the blankets, I think it's a very good gift for an aunt or uncle to buy, but we all have different expectations at Christmastide.

I think the happiest people are those who have no expectations at all, no?

SummerNights · 01/01/2009 19:57

I like the idea of blankets etc per se but think that these are a bit generic (and someone has already mentioned gender stereotyping - my dd would hate a pink blanket). My dc's would love a Ben 10 or Chelsea, Man U, Transformers blanket etc indeed I bought dd a Dr Who towel last year which she lovingly uses at school for swimming

i think it is the blandness of them that grates and I agree with this, altho I also agree that any gift is better than not as i struggle to buy for 13 and 15 yr old step nephews (only mention the 'step' as i have only known them for a couple of years so really not sure what they are into!)

Flihgtattendant · 01/01/2009 20:07

Solo, your handmade ones are really, really special

andaSOLOnewyear · 01/01/2009 20:11

Thank you Flight! Happy New Year Honey!

andaSOLOnewyear · 01/01/2009 20:12

I've just put the latest creations on my profile page...

ilove · 01/01/2009 20:12

I have fleece blankets and they are a godsend...perfect for guests, snuggling under, replacing duvets when child/ren puke all over bed/bedding/you, and my children love them as comfort things as well.

Send them here, I'll have ALL of them...

squik · 01/01/2009 20:32

My mam brought ds a fleece blanket for xmas as part of his xmas box. He loves it.
But, then he really did want one, especially as dd has 'nicked' the one we have in the lounge for her own use.

seeker · 01/01/2009 23:08

Solo - if you're still around - do you just cut the fleece and blanket stitch round it or is there something else you have to do to finish the edge? I really fancy making some blankets!

andaSOLOnewyear · 01/01/2009 23:46

Seeker, I finish the edges as necessary. Please, please don't copy my blankets. I am desperately trying to make ends meet and don't sell very many as it is. I really don't need competition and you are in Kent as am I...

seeker · 01/01/2009 23:55

Honestly - I won't copy - it's just that my friend's just had a baby and I thought I'd make her one (pink with a big red star on it) - and a couple for us to add to our huge rug collection. But I won't if you don't want me too - sorry!! And mine would be absolute cr*p compared to yours anyway!
