To think PIL should have called us on xmas day

PIL wanted to see us over the xmas period but had plans for xmas day and boxing day apparently.

We couldn't fit them in at any other time so said we'd see them mid/end January. DH called and asked them could they post the presents for the DC so that they could have them to open from santa on the day.

PIL said they'd rather wait til they saw them to see them open them in person, which I was not at all happy with. We ended up rowing about it and PIL didn't even call us on xmas day. I can't believe they wouldn't phone to wish us merry xmas.

Did you get gifts for your PILs? How did you get them to your PILs.

ruddynorah · 30/12/2008 00:29

what were these 'family commitments' that stopped you from seeing your ....errrr... family at christmas??

you sound dreadfully self absorbed.

your kids won't give a flying fig, they will be just delighted to get the presents in january.

Alambil · 30/12/2008 01:17

Why didn't YOU drive the 45 minutes to collect the presents / take the kids / do the stuff ?

Old age and driving are not good combinations - it takes more concentration and 45 mins for elderly drivers is a LONG time.

I take my grandmother the 15 minute trip to see her friend because she finds driving even that long too tiring

You are incredibly strange, self absorbed and well - rude. There is no other word. You are being rude.

Of COURSE they want to see the children open the presents. Of COURSE they want to be there; that's the WHOLE POINT - seeing their little glowing faces, the huge smiles, the hugs of appreciation, the kisses of thanks.

FC delivers presents that people buy. Sell your kids this story ASAP and you bypass the whole "but SANTA can get it" when actually you can't afford it or it's sold out for weeks on end before Christmas. Then of course your children will learn that people have worked long and hard to save their money to spend on presents - they will appreciate them more from people they know, IMO.

Sure, Santa can bring some - but not every single one, surely? How strange.

I think you need to ring the inlaws, tell them you're sorry for making such a big hoohar over nothing and book a weekend to visit them, or they visit you.

Don't be so self absorbed and ruin the relationship over a bloody christmas present, for goodness sake.

Do you realise how lucky you are to have grandparents for your children? Not only the people, but people willing to spend money on them and love them so much that they want to be with them to enjoy their gifts?

Lewis, I also tell my kids that presents are paid for.

SANTA brings the presents, but the parents still have to pay for them. I don't think it hurts them to know this, I've always said it.

Anyway, I think we've scared the OP off.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/12/2008 13:03

Maybe she's gone to make it up with her inlaws.

pantomimEDAMe · 30/12/2008 13:12

I do hope so! Poor PILs being ordered to visit on ONE day and told if they can't make that narrow window - because the OP clearly thinks other family members are more important - they can't see their own grandchildren over Christmas. The idea that they should drive to their son's work to drop off presents without even seeing the grandchildren is incredibly rude.

purepurple · 30/12/2008 13:19

op is on her high horse, it's a long way to fall back to earth with us mere mortals
so all the oldies are good for are the presents?
what a wonderful role model for the children

Annya · 30/12/2008 13:26

My PIL do the 'all the presents come from Santa' thing and I find it very odd. I had never heard of it before. My son is not yet two so it was no big deal this year but I am certainly not going to let him think all his pressies come from Santa! It would teach him nothing about gratitude and appreciation. PIL think it is more 'magic'. What's wrong with a stocking of Santa stuff and normal presents from family and friends?
