Neighbour drinking and driving - what should I do?

Hi all, was hoping some advice.

I know there have been some other drinking and driving threads recently so hoping there will be someone with some good ideas.

My DH just went across the road to check all was ok with our neighbours because their garage door was open. He found our neighbour virtually in unconcious with drink and wedged into his car. He was so p*ssed he had driven into his garage and couldnt get out of the car. DH helped him, and he is back in the house now.

We have heard from another neighbour that he regularly drinks and drives but this is the first time we have seen it ourselves. Also, we are really shocked by quite HOW drunk he was. Im not saying drinking and driving is ever excusable, of course not, but being this drunk and driving shocks me to the core.

It seems he goes somewhere and comes back drunk so it is hard for us to prevent this in future by calling the police and catching him in the act. If we call the police is there a chance they will go round and scare him into not doing it anymore?

Im really angry. Any advice gratefully received. THank you.

Of course you should call.

If he's that drunk I don't suppose he will even put two and two together and think it was you. If he was that drunk, he WILL have been driving terribly and anyone could have reported him - any of hundreds of drivers he'd passed. It seems obvious to YOU that it's you calling but it won't to him.

Please do it, he sounds out of control and it has to be only a matter of time until he kills someone.

I would have left him in the car, legged it home and called the police immediately, tbh.

Hate drink driving. And would not want to run the gauntlet of a possibly drunk neighbour in his car, every time I walked up my road!!

ScaredOfEverything · 27/12/2008 20:15

Problem solved. I cant believe my eyes but he just drove his car out of the garage again and drove off! SO I called the police and they are going to look out for him.

Stupid, stupid man. I hope they catch him.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 27/12/2008 20:18

Oh I can't believe it! Praying they catch him before he hurts someone.

Nighbynight · 27/12/2008 20:20

what a prat. Well done. I hope they catch him before he does some damage.

ScaredOfEverything · 27/12/2008 20:21

Well done Scared. Hopefully they will catch him. He will automatically be banned if they do. Let's hope they find him before he hurts someone - you weren't to know he would get back in the car. It's not normal, rational behaviour. You have done the right thing.

pamelat · 27/12/2008 20:25

well done.

TheSeriousSanta · 27/12/2008 20:27

Well done... You HAVE done the right thing.

THe chance of him not causing damage to something (or worse, someONE) is minimal.

I hope they catch him...

ScaredOfEverything · 27/12/2008 20:35

Oh crap. He is back. Obv didnt get caught.

Apparently I can go to my local station and make the accusation and then they will investigate. Going to do that tomorrow.

So angry, just had a pregnancy-hormone fuelled cry! Grrr!

fishie · 27/12/2008 22:23

well done. what a pity they didn't pick him up and you have go in.

AuntieMaggie · 27/12/2008 22:36

Drink driving makes me so angry - most drink drivers are only worried about whether they get caught and never even consider what could happen.

Please please please report anyone you know who drink drives. It could be your children/parents/siblings/partner that gets hurt. The more of us that report these people the less of them will be on the roads to hurt innocent victims.

Also, most people are over the limit after 2 drinks so keep that in mind next time you think "I'll be ok to have one more".

freshasadaisy · 28/12/2008 15:53

Have you heard anything yet SOE?

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/12/2008 00:27

well done for reporting him - shame he didnt get caught

lets hope if he is silly enought to do it again, that he gets caught before he kills someone

maidenvoyage · 29/12/2008 00:39

I was reading through this thread and at first thinking that it was just a nosey neighbour but now agree that you should if and when it happens again call the police. I would never drink and drive only for the fact that i WOULD HATE TO THINK I WOULD KNOCK DOWN AND KILL SOMEONE. I think that in this world we should all look out for each other and by reporting him you will actually be doing him and anyone else a massive favour and ridding society of drunk drivers that kill people on the roads wether they mean to or not. My sons friend who was 15 was killed by a drunk driver who had actually been drinking the night before was still over the limit...

nappyaddict · 29/12/2008 00:41

Hope they catch him soon. He doesn't deserve to have a license.
